Is it possible

Age and personality are what matter more than size of the rack.

Yep...some bucks are just wimps and won't even get past the bluff stage by another more aggressive buck.

I know they'll get into boxing matches while they are still in velvet here during the summer months. Got TC pics in the past of bucks doing that in MS several times.

All about maturity, attitude, and dominance. If the 9 is a mature deer and the 8 not a mature deer, I would think it would be unlikely that the younger deer would have run him off. Possible though that the bigger deer may have moved on for something he likes elsewhere or if the deer is feeling pressure he may have moved.

That said, we watched a 2.5 year old fork here last year that thought he was the dominant buck, had a real bad attitude and challeneged adn even pushed around other bigger antlered 2.5 year olds.
