Gamerp32000
Any advice on how to tackle a late season buck? I rifle hunt and our season ends on the 6th of Jan.

wtnhunt
Not had a great deal of luck late season, but think food sources in places where food is short could pay off.
abrown
I've had my best luck in December, I grunted in BOTH bucks and grunted in another one this past weekend. Alot of hunters have put the grunt tube up, but I've come to find out that since the rut is done and most the does have been bred, that the bucks are still cruzing for the younger does, and they've already established their dominancey so they come in looking to run another buck off. In essence, the competition for the few remaining does in heat go WAY UP. That's just a philosophy, I've never heard of any hunting shows talk about it, but I've filled two tags with mature bucks using it. P.S. Food sources in return are where the does are going to be hitting, so like the guys above said, food sources are always a good place. I hunt CRP thats close to a wheat field, so I'm hitting their coridor, or travel route.

Here in the Midwest i hunt over food sources bucks are worn out from the rut and want to replenish they're bodies I'm hunting in central Texas it been pretty warm here. Right now it seems the deer are having a field day with the acorns on the ground. Last few weekend haven't produced anything. The grunts don't seem to work either
whitetailfreak55
The ruts later on then down there from what i hear right? If that's the case then find where the does are and then you'll find the bucks. Food is more then likely where the does will be or thick cover where they bed just not to close to catch them coming from the beds. Don't over look little fingers of trees where you normally wouldn't expect to see deer because the bucks won't want any competition so they won't bed in they're normal places. Good luck
abrown
Sounds familar, two things, doe grunts to pull the does in and a drag rag to pull the bucks in, those are the only two things I know other than setting up on a travel route! fly
It's tough for sure. Go to the thick areas no one else has been (preferably next to food and does). This time of year I find zero deer or a ton. Once I find where all the does are I set up and wait. Sometimes after the does come out to feed a buck follows them out.
