How old were you when you went on your first deer hunting trip? Mine was this year. I went with my Uncle, his brother, and my cousin. We went to Amherst VA. We stayed in a small 13x13 one room cabin for a week. I had the time of my life up there though. Just the outdoors and cookin outside and just getting away from the hassles of everyday life.I didn't even kill a deer but I wouldn't trade that expierence for anything. I also learned a lot while I was up there. It rained about two of the days we were there but it didnt stop us from seeing deer . My Uncles brother killed a nice 5 point and my cousin killed a real nice 6 point!

I just thought I would share my first time at deer camp. Maybe you guys could share yours too.

Re: Deer Camp

When I was first old enough to legally hunt on my own, a highschool buddy and myself went up on our hill (about 1/2 mile) and built a pretty good lean-to. It was shaped mostly like an oblong igloo with just a small entrance that could be covered. The thing was built out of a lattice-work of saplings with pine boughs for roofing and turned out pretty weather-tight. When deer season opened (gun) we hauled all our supplies up to the new camp and spent the first three days of the season hunting out of our camp. That was great fun. We shot a few squirrels too for a bit of camp meat. Unfortunately, we didn't get any deer, but the whole experience was really something. Back in those days, we didn't have all the nice warm sleeping bags and stuff like today, But we made do with piles and piles of blankets. Comfort was never an issue even though we had about a 1/2 foot of snow on the 2nd day.

That was my first hunting trip, and only a few since have come even close to that one.

Re: Deer Camp

Hmmmmmmmmmm--I was 23. Went to Kelleys Island with a few of my buds. I was totally new to bowhunting, but they had been at it for a few years. We saw a few deer running away from us the first evening, then got stopped by the game warden for spotlighting (talk about totally ignorant to the law--guilty as charged, but he let us off because we didn't have our bows), other than that, never saw a deer as I sat on a tree limb in a drizzling rain.

We did hammer the walleyes that weekend though. cool.gif

Re: Deer Camp

My first actual deer camp was this past season and it was awesome. We stayed in a Cabela's Outfitter tent. It was 12x20 and had the vestibule also. It was really cool staying in the woods instead of staying in a hotel. Although the old guys dont want to do it next year because it took so long to set up and down we convinced one guy to bring his 5th wheel so we will still be out there at our spot. I will try to get some pictures on here to show you guys our set up.

Re: Deer Camp

[ QUOTE ]

It helped me to realize that there is more to the beauty of the hunt than the harvest itself and that not everything has to be killed just because you can.

[/ QUOTE ]

That sentence is 100% true for me. I don't NEED to kill an animal to have a succesful hunt. There are not many days I spend in a treestand, with a bow in my hand, or in one of my ground spots, with a shotgun, or muzzleloader, that I don't see something that makes me thankfull for being in the woods that day. Some of my most memorable days in the woods have been days where I didn't harvest a deer.

Re: Deer Camp

When i was 14 i got to go down to deer camp for opening day of shotgun season. We have a one room cabin, a trailer with 2 bedrooms, and a big barn where we keep the tractor. It was an awesome experience talking to all my dads friends and just hangin out cookin sausage by the fire. i got my first buck the morning of and it was unforgettable.

Re: Deer Camp

There's nothing like deer camp.I've been going to one my whole life and i don't think it has changed a bit. It's a single wide trailer with a enclosed lean to built on the side for playing cards at night. No running water and we have a generator for electricity and LP for a small furnace and the stove. It will sleep 8 people, but it's only full for shotgun season.I go up and stay a few times during the summer and ride the 4 wheeler and cut wood.Nothing like waking up on a spring day to the sound of a turkey gobbling!

Re: Deer Camp

I was probably 4 or 5 when I first went hunting with my Dad. We always used to go camping for the opening weekend of squirrel season. I'd tote my BB gun when we went, I think I was just used to walk around the other side of the tree to get the fox squirrels to move back around for a shot.. I've been hooked ever since

Re: Deer Camp

A friend of mine asked me to go to deer camp with him at age 12. Since that day I've been going to deer camp every week of bow season. We added on to it and have 4 different rooms to sleep. This land is located on 1,000 acres of ridges and river bottoms. So we invite about 5 people to hunt with us stay there and eat the best food in the world.
