VTbowman Posted March 30, 2005 Report Share Posted March 30, 2005 Those of you who know me, know I have a bit to much around the mid section. Yes yes I admit it. I am a bit over weight. At 5'7" and 237 lbs. I have had enough. I hit that pre-determined weight limit about 2 weeks ago, well went over it by 2 lbs really. So I started to do something about it the very next day. I get up at 5am to do a 20 minute workout and done so EVERY day without exception since the 1st day. You see, my wife got one of those olyptical (sp) machines for her b-day, a real nice one, and yes like normal, it turned quickly into a coat rack. LOL Well I decided to start using it. I also cut my food portions literally in half and been real good about not eating fried or fast foods what so ever. I am ONLY drinking water and juices. Well to date I have lost about 13 lbs but man I am feeling like reverting back to my evil ways. I eat food to put food in my body not for what it will taste like. The same for drinks. But there are a few things I wish I could gorge on. LOL Beer being one of them... I just need a bit of encouragement from my RealTree friends on this one. But I am feelin weak.... you're doin a good thing VT! its great that you have the motivation to do something about it. don't give up bud! my dad was a bit overweight too, he is 6'2" and he was 260 pounds. within a couple of months he was down to 220 pounds. looks great! everyone asked him if he was on the Atkins diet, he wasn't he was on "Dave's Diet" as he called it what he did was basically the same thing as you. he cut his eating in half, and only drank water and juice. he might of had 1 beer a week. and he would also go for a walk downtown with Mom in the evenings, and he started using my weights as well. I don't have a weight problem but it must be hard to disicipline yourself to do that. I like to eat too much so I couldn't be a good weight loser. About a month and a half ago, I made a VERY slight change--switched to diet soda and have lost a good deal of weight from that alone. A few words of advice... First, though juice is tasty, most of it is LOADED with sugar and calories--not much better than soda. You may want to try the Ocean Spray low carb cranberry-grape or cranberry-apple juices. Those are delicious and much lower in calories. Second, it's not only how much you eat, but WHAT you eat. I only recently started really reading labels and I was SHOCKED how many calories are in food like fried chicken. Even "healthy bran muffins" are usually loaded with calories. Pringles...the little can that goes great with lunch--300 calories. Just eat smartly--you don't have to starve yourself. Lastly, don't be discouraged if your rate of weight loss tapers off...short term changes will make your weight spike downwards, but it will become more gradual as you adjust to your new lifestyle. One of my new year's resolutions was to get in shape..I started late, but am really starting to watch my diet. Hang in there, VT...you'll feel much better when you meet your goal! OK White Ninja.....remember these numbers... 3,500 calories = 1 lb body weight Those are the majic numbers that will either add or subtract to you. 3,500 / 7days = 500 Take away only 500 calories per day and you will lose a pound a week safely and without any drawbacks. My wife has started with me so its a team effort which helps big time. Nothing worse then cutting out snacks and junk food and then your partner is gorging on them right in front of you... I am no stranger to the weight loss game. Been there done that sort of deal. I am aware of how slow weight comes off after the 1st couple weeks. I realize most of my 1st week was water weight and shrinking of my stomach. Both make you feel like your loosing lbs fast! I know better. I have also been eating basically good all along, some fast food now and again but basically good. Its just about 3x the amount of food that I should have been eating. I always eat until I am full which takes a lot of food now a days. As for juices, I am basically sticking with grapefruit juice and I do switch out with the cran-grape, cran-apple from time to time. But water is the main drink. Since we are both doing this my wife has changed the way she cooks for us too. Very health and diet conscience foods and dishes are the norm now. But my will power is weak at times and I feel like giving up. Not all together but it always starts out great and tappers off as the weeks go by. Not only that, but out of the two of us, I am the "strong willed one". So if I ever want to slip or binge my wife is like, "Lets just do it." LOL I am 225lbs today and my 1st goal is to break 200lbs. Theres lemonade, pink lemonade, raspberry, several good flavors, and only 10 calories a bottle. I have heard that if you schedule one day every other week to eat whatever you feel like it will be easier to stick to your diet on the days you feel weak because you know you have that one day coming up. No matter what you eat that day you can't make up for all the good you've done the last two weeks. You will be so used to eating healthy most of the time that even on that one day you will still probably eat better than on a regular day before the diet.
