Bad experience with 2 Humaine Societies.

Now before you get all riled up. I do not support this organization since PETA does.

However I was in a bind. crazy.gifcrazy.giffrown.gif

The day before Easter the wife and I decided (more the wife) to get a kitten or puppy for our kids as an easter gift.

There was nothing free or close to affordable in the paper so I figured we could run down to the Humaine Society to pick something up.

Naturally I called ahead since I have a 30 minute drive to one and an hour drive to the other.

BTW, This is drive one way.

So we get down to the closer one and they neglected to tell us they were not open until 11am, I called at 9:30am, talked to the girl who told us what was there, and we went straight there.

So I got irritated with this, and the wife was too.

Being about 1/2 way there, we drove down to the 2nd branch and they were open. We decided it was for the best since this one very 5x larger and most likely had more to choose from.

Well get in there and they started to "interview" us. I mean like 20 to 25 questions about this and that. I understand them wanting to make sure the animals are going to good homes but I felt it was just to much.

Then they asked us for proof of home ownership! crazy.gifmad.gif

The only documents they would take was a tax bill or mortgage copy. Yea right I carry both around in the glove compartment.

So this is where I blew up. mad.gif

I asked why I was not told to bring such proof? mad.gifmad.gif

They knew I called, they remembered me being concerned because of how far I had to drive.

Then they were telling us they wanted $75 for a cat and $90 for a dog. shocked.gif

Higher for puppies and kittens. shocked.gifshocked.gif

Yeah RIGHT!

Man it really torqued me off. mad.gifmad.gif

So we stomp out of there and made it apparent that we were both PO-ed.

I was under the impression this organization wanted to give animals away, that they cry and complain about all the aniamls they have to take care of or put down if no one takes them and then they put folks threw this just to take a stray or unwanted animal...???

I just dont get it... mad.gif

It use to be you were asked for a "donation to help cover the cost of care, shots, etc", and I was fine with that.

Needless to say we did not get our kids a pet for Easter, but did find a nice all black cat (6 mos. old) a few days later in a local small town news paper.

Re: Bad experience with 2 Humane Societies.

Around here you cannot adopt a pet from the shelter unless it is spayed or neutered, and has its shots.

That cost is passed on to the adopters.

I guess your Veterinarians get paid a lot more "up north" than they get down here.

About $25. to $45. is the going rate here unless the pet is a pure bred or something special.

The price difference here is mostly between male or female, and not between cat or dog.

Re: Bad experience with 2 Humaine Societies.

They say they are all about the animals mad.gif, but they kill more animals than any of us combined, and with less reason(they can't eat Fifi...just kill her)...

And they now charge more than some breeders to buy an animal they are gonna kill if you don't buy it. shocked.gif

99% of "Save the animals" organizations actualy increase the suffering and damage to civilization and the animals. Ever notice how many deer get hit on the roads these days...

Sorry I realize I'm "preaching to the chior"...

Don't even get me started... confused.gif

Re: Bad experience with 2 Humaine Societies.

Sorry about your bad experience. Here in OKC there is also an adoption fee. It is to cover expenses of spaying/neutering/shots/deworming and so on. There just isn't enough tax money to supplement the shelters across the country.

I think the adoption fees are actually a good deal for the adopters. My fee for spaying a cat is right around $100 bucks--and that doesn't include vaccinations. So if you think about it--you are actually getting a good deal at the shelter.

Sorry you had such a bad experience.

Don't confuse your local humane society animal shelter with the animal rights whackos Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The HSUS does not operate animal shelters anywhere.

That said...it's sad that you have to jump through so many hoops with your local shelter. It's becomming a pretty comon practice with animal shelters now to make you prove that you will be a responsible pet owner. Not saying it's right or wrong, but getting a cat or dog from a shelter certainly shouldn't be as rigorous as applying for a mortgage!

You would think they would have told him what was required, seeing how far of a drive it was!

[/ QUOTE ]

I think this is what angered me most. It was a long drive and all for not.

For the record, I have no issues with helping with the cost of medical bills for whatever animal I am "adopting". But since I was trying to ease the burned and take an animal off thier hands I do not feel it should of been 100% of all they costs.

I just felt they were putting me threw the ringer.

Like someone said, I was not trying to buy a house or car!

I wanted a pet for my kids...

Not being able to get one was disappointing enough..

Re: Bad experience with 2 Humaine Societies.

ohh man you struck a nerve here i think they are a sorry excuse for an organazation. I found a puppy on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere the day after thanksgiving and 3 days before deer season I left the pup at my girlfriends house for a couple days since i would be busy getting ready for the opener and such and i had her call the dog warden just to make sure nobody reported it and to let them know we were gonna keep it....They said they would have to come pick up the dog then we would have to pay to adopte it back plus all the shots and to be neutered it was around 120 bucks the only day they could come pick it up was opening day of deer season!!! i called them back later that day and told him the puppy ran away and i could not find it.....

Re: Bad experience with 2 Humaine Societies.

I had a buddy try to adopt a beagle from our local humane society and they refused to let him have it because Lord forbid he was going to use it to hunt rabbits. They would rather put an animal down than let it go to a good home where it was going to have the chance to do what beagles love to do. Go figure. My buddy ended up having a friend adopt the dog and give it to him, so all ended up well, but I will never support them because of this.

Re: Bad experience with 2 Humaine Societies.

After we had to put my last lab down, we checked into our animal shelter also. This is the same place we had gotten our last dog. No, she wasn't a purebred, but one of the best dogs we have ever had. They wanted $120 for any kind of dog, whether a pup or older. The dog had to be spayed before we could get one. I like the idea but how many people can really afford that frown.gif I'm sure that they could of found great homes for some dogs and cats, if not for that.!! Sure, I ended up paying $500, plus all the spaying costs and shots for my chocolate lab I have now, but I might of got another pup from them and been very happy.

I did the same thing for my cat...but didn't tell them it ran away...just kept him and had the my vet do the "fixing" and shots etc and prove to the shelter it was done...the vet was actualy cheaper than the animal shelter. wink.gif

Re: Bad experience with 2 Humaine Societies.

Here they also charge you if you bring the animals in.You find a dog and want to drop it off there they charge you 25$ to do it, weather its your dog or not. Then they charge people I believe another 100$ + to adopt them.

Around here for 100$ I can get all the lab puppies i want, with papers shocked.gif
