jci63
http://www.sptimes.com/2005/03/18/Tampabay/In_schools__violence_.shtml quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ST. PETERSBURG - The pupils were counting jelly beans as part of a math exercise when one of them started acting silly. Mrs. Ottersbach decided to take away her jelly beans. The 5-year-old didn't like that. She terrorized Room 13 at Fairmount Park Elementary, trashing Mrs. O's desk, smashing a candy dish and kicking another teacher in the shins, officials said. At the principal's office, it got worse. The girl threw books and boxes, climbed atop the desk and started stomping. She drew on the walls, hit the assistant principal in the stomach. Minutes later, the girl was in the back of a police cruiser, under arrest for battery. Her hands were bound with plastic ties, her ankles in handcuffs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Of course, her mother's response to all this is to hire a lawyer and blame the teachers, the principal, the police. quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The girl was to return to the classroom today, but her mother said that won't happen. "She's never going back to that school," Inda Akins said Thursday evening from her apartment on 39th Lane S. "They set my baby up." The 31-year-old single mother of three said she is consulting an attorney. Akins, whose last name is different from her daughter's, blamed the assistant principal, Nicole Ross Dibenedetto. She accused Dibenedetto of harping on the girl to the point where she "acted up" in class. "Ever since I told her to stay away from my daughter, there's been problems." The police reports on Monday's incident raised some questions. The girl is described as wearing a "tan dress, white shirt, white shoes. Hair in braids." Height: 4 feet 6 inches. Weight: 60 pounds. Akins laughed at the last part. Her daughter, she said, weighs 40 pounds. The girl stood next to a reporter and measured about 31/2 feet. "She's just a regular girl," Akins said. As she spoke, her three children rambled through the apartment. The girl, the oldest child, rode a pink bicycle through the living room, one of the training wheels missing. Her brother got up on a table and swatted a light fixture, laughing. "I wanted to play the jelly bean game," the girl said when asked what upset her at school Monday. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Watch the videos and decide for yourself if anyone aside from the little girl is out of line. buckee
Re: What\'s your opinion If you notice in the second video, the police know this child and have had a run-in with her before. I applaud the patience of the hand-tied teachers and I applaud the police for getting the situation in control and getting her safely out of the classroom, so that the class could get back to normal and the other children could come back in. I don't blame the police for their actions. They were gentle and did it for the childs own good and safety. How else could they have escorted her out of the classroom??? I really don't think there was any other way.

Palssonater
Re: What\'s your opinion She had so much stuff that she could toss and mess up. The teacher handled it very well. I can't believe that was a kindergarten student. Holding room/rubber rooms with nothing to wreck for fiddle with. Would be better than taking them into an office with scissors, pens, etc. And, I've never seen a video camera in the room. But I do wonder if it could better education. Doesn't have to be highquality, perhaps just a security like thing. Would protect the student and the teacher, depending on the scenario. Wisconsinboy
Re: What\'s your opinion after watching them videos im going to post. for one the girl is 5 how in the world could a teacher/ fully grown adult not control her? Why was there a video camera in the class room? why put cuffs on a 5yr old. inside of a room like that whats the worse that could happen? why didnt they just put the girl up in a cell for a night then if she was so bad. wtnhunt
Re: What\'s your opinion Believe this is what has been on the news the past few days. The child should have been dealt with, but not so sure the officers approach was the best that could have been taken.
markyj987
Re: What\'s your opinion I find NO fault whatsoever in the actions of the school or of the police. When the kid started to have a tantrum, her mother was called and asked to come to the school right away. She could not get there immediately, but said she would as soon as she could. She then told the school to not lay a hand on her daughter. The child's actions became worse and the school liason police were contacted, but they could not get there for a while. Meanwhile, the tirade continued...and the regular police were called. So, if the mother wasn't going to show up...and she wasn't going to let the school try to restrain the child, what was the school to do? As far as the cops go, their job is NOT to play nicey-nice, but to preserve order and protect and serve. I see no reason why they should have let the kid keep hitting, kicking, and throwing things. I go beyond not blaming the cops and the school, but giving them a kudos for how they handled it. The mother definitely needs to learn how to handle her kids. Two year olds have screaming fits and tantrums--NOT five-year-olds. Obviously, the kid's not disciplined at home and if what the cops did gave her a good scare---good! [/ QUOTE ] How would you have delt with this if you couldn't touch the student? In Arkansas, when a child enters the school campus the teachers are the legal guardians and have the right (responsibility) to discipline them. This child should have been bent over and had her tail end "lit on fire" if you know what I mean. The mother is a moron and obviously has no idea how to raise a child. [ QUOTE ] for one the girl is 5 how in the world could a teacher/ fully grown adult not control her? [/ QUOTE ] For one the staff was told by the mother not to physically touch her child, secondly a 5yr. old out of control can be a force to restrain without leaving marks.... [ QUOTE ] Why was there a video camera in the class room? [/ QUOTE ] With all of the law-suites that are being filed against our schools these days some schools have choosen to video tape thier class rooms for defense purposes such as this one....we have them here at our elementery school and I'm all for it... [ QUOTE ] why put cuffs on a 5yr old. inside of a room like that whats the worse that could happen? [/ QUOTE ] What could happen is self injury and worse, handcuffing to me seems to be the lesser of two evils in my opinion. [ QUOTE ] why didnt they just put the girl up in a cell for a night then if she was so bad. [/ QUOTE ] I wonder the same thing, I would have been all for that also,,,,,our younger generation is out of control,,NO disapline, NO respect for others or themselves, and need to be tuaght at a young age that there are consequences to thier actions other than a time-out to their rooms to watch the big screen TV, and play video games..... I for one think this situation was handled quite appropriately.....
