JimT Posted May 9, 2005 Report Share Posted May 9, 2005 Today is opening day of season B here in Maine. I got up at 3:45 and was in the truck at 4:00. I was really torn where to go. I could either hunt where there are few birds and little pressure, or hunt where there is some pressure and lots of birds. I chose the latter. Was set up at 4:45 and they were gobbling about 100 yards away already. They had two choices. Come to me or head right away from me. They headed away...lol. So I packed it up real quick and ran over to where I thought they would be. They were about 150 yards away when I spotted them in a field. I crawled out and set my decoy about 20' out and craweld back to the tree. I started to give some real soft clucks and purrs and could tell by the gobbles they were closing the distance. At 6:00 they were on me to my right. Only problem was he was behind a bush, but looking at my decoy. I gave a soft purr and he started towards the decoy. I set down the slate and -slowely- picked up my gun. I had to lift the gun thru some alder branches to get a bead on him. When I did I gave him a load of Remington Nitro #5s at 18 paces. He went straight down. Three weeks of hard scouting paid off for me...And I am one happy camper right now!!!! It measures in at 20.90 pounds,both spurs were 1", and it has a 10 7/8th" beard.
