western NY bowhunter
Well...I was out hunting this morning and finally managed to strike up a couple of lonely gobblers around 10:00. They were only about 80-90 yds. from me when they first gobbled so I quickly sat down agianst the nearest tree, hooked my crystal FREAK call to me leg and started to give them some soft seductive calling. While I was sitting there calling to the gobblers, a chainsaw that I could hear running in the distance was starting to get closer. I had been sitting there for 5 or 6 minutes without hearing any more gobbles...only the sounds of the chainsaw that was now just below me in the woods. I was starting to curse out my luck...when I thought that I could hear some drumming behind some trees about 35-40 yds. out in front of me in the field. Hmmmm....so he's trying the old come in silent trick on me is he? My gun was up and I was on red alert ready for some action. Next thing I know, a big ole' red head comes peaking up over the knoll and he is heading right for the opening where I had my gun pointed. He started to fan out a little bit and the other gobbler popped up right beside him. Both of their necks were stretched right out trying to get a look at the hen that they had heard. They were only 30 yds. from me and all I had to do was wait for them to take a few more steps to clear some brush and give me a shot at the strutter. Everything looked like it was going to be picture perfect. All of a sudden, they turned around and started running the other way never giving me a clear shot. I just sat there in total disbelief for a few seconds wondering what could have gone wrong. I turned around....and here comes some moron walking up through the woods with a chainsaw, followed by 10 or 12 old people dressed in white t-shirts and shorts. They all were carrying some kind of field guide and binoculars and were hiking the Finger Lakes Trail. I couldn't believe it....I have totally worked my butt off for the past week and a half just to have my moment of truth screwed up by some hikers. I sat there against the tree and watched all of the people walk with in 30-yds. of me without even seeing me sitting there (on the bright side...at least my Mossy Oak camo works good). Man was I mad....there's over 400 miles of the Finger Lakes Trail running throughout New York state...why did they have to show up in this exact spot when I was 5 seconds away from having a gobbler's head in my sights?!I thought about firing a shot up in the air just to scare the crap outta them. Instead, I got up and hurried to get on the other end of the field to try to get the gobblers going again. Of course I never heard another peep from them. I guess I 'll have to go back there again tomorrow and see if I can get then to come in again (the gobblers...not the hikers).
redbeard
Re: Dang bird watchers... Man, that is bad. Reminds me of a hunt up in the Ga mountains, was set up on a food plot and watchin' some birds when here comes a bike rider, he hollers and waves "Turkey Huntin'?". No, I thought, I here to ambush mountain bikers.
Squirrelhunter91
Re: Dang bird watchers... Dang that stinks western NY bowhunter. I would have flipped. You should have shot up in the air, to see if they would jump...
