bowhunt101 Posted May 21, 2005 Report Share Posted May 21, 2005 Howdyyall. I am currently in the market for a new rifle for deer hunting. My dad is a browning man but I have always been partial to a Remington. My shotgun is a Remington 12 Gauge Super Magnum and I was very pleased with it. My dad shoots brownings including a BAR 270 and a Gold 12 Gauge. My question though is on the Remington 7400 Autoloader. My brother just bought one in 270 Win last year and loves the gun. He killed two deer with it his first year using the gun. His is a Synthetic model witha Tasco 4-16x40 Scope. My current rifle is a Marlin 30-30 in need of new scope mounts and Im lookin for somethin that will reach out a lil further than the ol 30-30. Im not sayin I dont like the 30-30 because it will knock a deer dead no dought, just want something that will go a lil farther. The Remington 7400 seems to fit the bill. It is sold cheaper than most automatic rifles, chambered for most good calibers, shoots good, and comes in both wood and synthetic stock. So far my choice is the Remington 7400 Wood Stock Version in 308 Winchester but what do you guys think about the 30-06???? It used to wear a wood stock, but now has a Bell & Carlson syn. on it. I have a 3x9 Nikon Buckmasters on top. I have had a great time with that rifle with no problems whatever. A .308 or 30-06 are both fine caliburs for it. Why not get a .270 if your brother loves his ? I feel confident with mine for anything up to an elk, considering good shot placement and a proper bullet. She maybe a hundred years old but she still has what it takes. I'm pretty sure you'll someday go hunting for elk, moose, bear------the 30/06 is a better fit than the others. Now to be the fly in the ointment. I would NOT get a semi-auto rifle. The trigger is BAD----and that's important when your shooting at a long distance. Also they REALLY need to be kept clean or you'll have jammin problems. Get a good bolt action rifle---that has an adjustable trigger. Savage, Remington, Winchester, Tikka or Ruger. Then put a good scope on it. A Leupold VX-II 3x9 fits it perfect. Then your set for anything you want to hunt in NA or even plains game in Africa. I would pass on the 7400----and get the Model 700. The 30-06 has more factory ammunition and can be had in a carbine model (18 1/2" barrel) and that is great for the kind of huntin I do. The semi automatic model will allow for a fast follow up shot if needed and thats the reason I opted for it. Nuthin against bolt actions just my preference. So far this is what I like the best, Remington 7400 Synthetic 30-06 Carbine (18 1/2" Barrel topped off with a Redhead Rifle Sling and Scope). The deer won't know which one it was hit with or die any faster with one over the other. As to which one has the most factory ammo, again, it really does not matter. Good quality loads for deer, bear, elk, moose, etc can be had from any of the big ammo makers in either chambering. The pumps and some of the semi guns can do anything the bolt guns do. You can get decent triggers with the assistance of a good gunsmith. I have a 742 Carbine in 30-06 and it is ok. Not great but ok. As for needing a follow up shot, get a cheaper gun and practice more. Usually-not always-but usually bolt-actions are more accurate, if you really want to shoot the longer ranges. And with the follow-up shot, a bolt-action wont slow you down enough to matter if you practice with it. It might even help you, because a lot of people bang away with a semi-auto without taking time for proper shot placement.
