I learned that a perfect shot from a .300 Win Mag at 20 yards does not always drop a buck to the ground like a ton of bricks.... took me two shots this past year, one at 20 yards, the other at about 8 yards both were great shots too... when we skinned the deer, we saw that the bullet had fragmented on impact! [/ QUOTE ] Are you using a long range round with a thinnly clad bullet designed to expand at the longer ranges? I've got the same problem with my 7 Rem Mag. If I shoot a deer at close range it frequently fragments and does a massive amount of internal damage without an exit wound. Of course the deer is dead pretty quick, but it sure messes up a lot of meat. That's why I usually use a different gun if I'm out to take a doe for eating. I grunted to stop a doe last season,she took a few more steps than I had planned and the result was a low shot and 4 hrs later I could not find her. LOL! (i might have kinda fallen cause i didn't get em all the way in, and fell 10 foot onto a barb wire fence that was touching the tree i was in.) I learned that I can outrun an angry bunch of bee's that had just had their nest accidentally stepped on...as long as my slower running brother in-law is with me. I learned the importance of lending your safety belt to your brother in-law, when he's removing your treestand from the woods at the end of the season. I learned that my brother in-law needs to have classes on the proper removal of climbing sticks from a tree at the end of the season. I learned that someone (particularily my brother in-law) with a severely sprained, slightly fractured ankle can still carry my treestand out of the woods after falling out of the tree.
