carbonhunter
Will a .22 LR HP enter and exit a medium sized wood chuck at 50 yards. I ask because The area I live in borders the city, and though Im VERY careful about my background and what angle shots i take I still worry about pass throughs. I alwasy figured hollow points would best prevent this from happening, but figured AJ would be able to make things a little clearer.

tedicast
Re: .22 LR ???? In my opinion, if you have to even worry about the bullet passing throug, then you probably shouldn't take the shot. Even if a bullet doesn't pass completely through, there is always the problem of a miss.
AJ
Re: .22 LR ???? It depends on the size of the chuck. If your shots are in a direction or place that can cause harm if it passes through, you do not need to be shooting there. Find another direction to shoot, or a new location. Like Tedicast mentioned, what happens if you miss? Everyone misses occasionally. Varmint hunters use the fast shooting cartridges with thin jacketed bullets as they will frag very easily. This is to minimize the possibility of a riccochet. If (when) they miss the bullet frags when it hits dirt. If you can use a treestand or shoot from the roof, or some other elevated position to give yourself a backstop, that will work also. Make sure your high enough to give as sharp of an angle to the target. I would use hollow points. They will open faster and if it does exit, it will have dumped enough energy to keep from going too far.
