Shutter
My brother and I took a backpacking trip to the Smokies last year. I usually keep a journal on our backpacking trips.. I could dig it up and provide more details if anyone is interested (I seem to remember writing down some colorful descriptions).. but here are the pics... The last day+night we were on top of Sterling ridge.. and at about that time the remnants of hurricane Frances (hit florida pretty bad last summer) started hammering us.. It was a rooouuugh trip backpacking.. (the last day is supposed to be easy right??) really tested our skills, wits, and off the cuff decision making.. we dealt with some flash floods, strong winds, and were constantly double checking each other for hyperthermia (err is it hypo?) anyways, here are some of the pics (sometimes it was hard to bring the camera out in the rain)

Shutter
Re: Backpacking the Smokey Mountains [pics] We were on the Tennessee side, hiked along Big Creek for 3 days and then up and over Sterling Ridge. The Smokey Mountains are a portion of the Appalachian Mtns.. They lie along the Tennessee and N. Carolina border. I thought the photos were a little bigger than that.. I'll resize and re-upload tonight.. They show a little better if they are larger.
Guest Andrea
Re: Backpacking the Smokey Mountains [pics] Hey Shutter... you should take that camera of yours and go to Tallulah Falls/Gorge. ( Up there around the Smokies) AWESOME SIGHT. I can just imagine some of the shots you could get.

GWSmith
Re: Backpacking the Smokey Mountains [pics] Tallulah Gorge/Falls North Georgia's first tourist attraction drew thousands every summer, and with the arrival in 1882 of what would become the Tallulah Gorge Railroad thousands a year turned into thousands a week. Shutter
Re: Backpacking the Smokey Mountains [pics] [ QUOTE ] what are you using equipment wise to get that quality of a picture? Frank [/ QUOTE ] Those were shot with my old Sony F707. The trick to the silky water shots (first and last ones) is to shoot in shutter priority mode (your camera has to have some manual control ability) and slow down the shutter speed quite a bit (.5-8+ seconds).. this causes a problem during daylight hours because you will collect too much light and wash out (over expose) the photo.. so there are a couple of tricks you can do.. one trick is to spot meter a dark spot of the frame (eg shadow, rock, dirt) and the other trick is to use an ND (grey) filter. (also, slowing the shutter down this slow requires a tripod) Sometimes I stack an ND8 + ND4 + polarizer so I can shoot a super long exposure, such as the following: (notice the wind moved the tree branch.. would have been perfect otherwise) thanks for the comments, glad you guys enjoyed them, I enjoyed shooting them
