Swamphunter Posted July 7, 2005 Report Share Posted July 7, 2005 We are thinking about getting central air from Sears and was wondering if anyone had ideas about how much it should cost for what we need. We currently have a forced air furnace and all the ductwork with our heating system. We basically need the part that attaches to the furnace and the outside unit only I believe. Anyone have any ideas what we are looking at? They are coming the end of the month to give us a quote, but I want to have an idea what to expect. I would call around Ken,,,the price is going to depend on the square footage you are trying to cool and if you want the unit zoned per room and what kind of service contract you are looking for......but I learned a very good lesson awhile ago ,,,, cheaper isn't always the best way to go,,,,,,BUY IT ONCE and be done with it..... We just got central air about 3 or 4 years ago (don't know how we survived w/o it for so long ), anyway. We have the same set up as you, our house is around 1600 sq ft. We had a 2 ton compressor installed for just over $1700. We got 3 or 4 quotes, and Sears was the the 2nd highest, with Bryant being the highest. I just figured that most people had a sears store near them and it would be the most universal brand that they would be familiar with. Thanks! My dad is an HVAC tech and master electrician and they do a lot of repair work for the units that Sears has put in (it could just be a local thing, but ask others who have central air about their experiences). A lot of times Sears only sells the unit and subs out the installation work, so it would be cheaper to get a company who is doing all the sales and work themselves. Good luck finding the best deal! Usually VERY high priced to the tune of almost double others. Their vinyl siding was almost three times everyone else. As the old saying goes, "Sears has been trying to go out of business for 30 years but their customers won't let them". Call a local HVAC where you can get local service in the event of a problem. I installed two complete units in my home recently: 1) Heil-- never had a problem with it. 2) Lennox-- terrible. It would work on AC but not heat when it came time. Then it would work on heat and wouldn't work on AC again. I made them replace the entire unit by screaming at the home office. Since then, I haven't had a problem.
