spyderpancake
Today started out good, it was not nearly as hot as it has been and i got to stay in the air-conditioned John Deere moving hay all day instead of working in the heat like i usually do. My boss was really happy b/c we got the best hay crop we have ever gotten. Then the evening turned bad. Me and my brother were asked by some friends of ours to feed their animals(horses, dogs, cats, rabbits), while they are gone to Florida this week. So yesterday we went and fed everything, but one of their black labs ran down the driveway, across the "invisible fence", and down the road. We tried calling it but it just turned down a dirt road and kept on scooting. So we jumped in the Explorer and followed it. We would get in front of it, stop, get out, and call it, but she would just run around us. We kept this up for about half a mile, til she finally got so exhausted that she let us catch her. It was very hot, about 102 with a heat index of over 110. So she hopped into the back and we carried her back to the house. They have a little plastic kiddie pool for the dogs to get in, and it jumped in and started wading around, so we didn't think anything about it. So we left. We got there today and the dog was floating in the pool, dead. The pool was full of blood. I don't know what happened, i guess she was too hot? I had no idea that that could kill them. So now i have to break the news to the Patricks. They have a 14-year old girl, and 11 year old boy, and they are gonna be so upset. I guess i will wait until they get home so i don't ruin their vacation. Sorry for the lenghty post, i just had to tell somebody about it, i feel so terrible
HuntingInMaine
Re: Why me??? Oh no! What a awful situation, but I think it is a good idea to wait until they get home to tell them. There is nothing they can do, so nothing good would come from telling them now.
Shaun_300
Re: Why me??? That's Sad! Don't blame yourself though bud, it definetly was not your fault! Animals are just like humans, they have a "time" too, unfortunately it was this dog's time.

birddog
Re: Why me??? Sorry to hear! Call a vet, and explain, at least then you have an educated guess about what happened: Sounds like the heat did a number: Also, I would dig a hole...sounds harsh, but at least then, your friends can have a buriel: If they are going to be gone for a while, bury the dog minus the collar: And be honest and explain: Good luck! Thoughts are with you.
IowaDeerHunter
Re: Why me??? Man that sucks Spyder. Too bad for the dog to. That really puts you in a tough situation. Should you bury the dog and where or just get rid of it.
spyderpancake
Re: Why me??? Well, I wanted to bury it at their place but the ground was too hard, it was like trying to dig concrete. So we brought it to my house and buried her out back. I just can't figure out what happened to her. The pool was full of blood but she wasn't bleeding anywhere, so it must have come out her mouth. And she smelled really bad, like a gut-shot deer almost. It is like everything ruptured inside of her, i don't know how. Who would think that water could cause so much harm? She either hit her head or was killed.

[/ QUOTE ] i wasn't sure about the bleeding either, but found a couple web sites that say there can be internal organ damage with heat stroke and this can cause some bleeding. If the pool was full of water, it wouldn't take a large amount of bleeding to make it look like there was a lot of blood loss.

I am very sorry for you loss and your situation. I am a dog lover, so I feel big time for the family. I wonder if her lungs would have dried or hemmoraged? spyderpancake
Re: Why me??? Well, the lady called home while i was at work today, so my mom told her about it. She took it pretty well, she said the dog had been hit in the head a couple years ago and had seizures every so often, i don't know if that had anything to do with it. buckee
Re: Why me??? Man, that's a real bummer. I was going to suggest waiting til they get home too, but too late for that now. I think it's good that you buried the dog. At least they won't have to deal with any unpleasantries when they arrive home. Sounds pretty strange alright. Maybe dogdoc can give you a bit of an educated answer. I feel for ya.
Guest bexar_county89
Re: Why me??? oh man, i'm sorry buddy thats harsh. sounds to me like something really did a number on her. I dunno wether it was the heat or maybe she had an anurism, if she had seizures. do yall think that would explain the blood. You did a good job tho spyder, you took care of it!! That's respectable
