Houston i have a problem...i have my testing to apply to the police service early next week and i just found out at my present blood pressure i will not be allowed to do the physical testing. My blood pressure is too low! crazy.gif I need to get it up about 12 points in the next 6 days...any suggestions? This is really annoying, i can see if it is too high, they don't want any heart attacks and such, but too low. ?

Re: How to raise blood pressure

Take a couple salt tabs before you go in.

Or, next time my wife dumps her day on me like she did last night, I'll call you and let you listen. The real BP raiser is trying to help her solve the problem, it's always a catch 22. Seems to raise mine pretty good. tongue.gif

Re: How to raise blood pressure

What if the when you arrive for the test an officer in charge tells you he wants to talk to you about all your wife's unpaid parking tickets right after the test. Surely there is somebody with a few connections areound here that can help you out there. Might get the BP a little too high though.

Tominator's idea about gulping down a couple of salt tabs sounds good to me too.

If that doesn't sound good you can give me your phone number and I'll email it to my ex-wife and tell her she can reach me at that number for the next month or so.

Re: How to raise blood pressure

All these are great ideas, Here is my suggestion. The morning before eat a salty meal then after letting that settle some go for a run. The key will be getting your heart rate up. The Blood pressure is directly related to how constricted your blood vessels are and how fast your heart rate is. Its hard to do something about the constricted blood vessels but you can get your heart rate up. Be sure you dont take anything that will relax you if your on medications that do that. Do this and your in!

Re: How to raise blood pressure

Okay,

Here are a few things off the top of my head that will help....... grin.gif All in fun, I'm not advocating any of this.....

Morning of the test.

Drink a full pot of coffee.

Smoke a pack of cigarettes.

Chew some skoal.

Eat a pound of bacon by yourself.

For the next 6 days, cook with lard.

Don't exercise.

Remember fried fatty food is your friend.

Fat = Flavor

Under no circumstances should you:

Exercise, get enough sleep, meditate, or just relax in general.

PS: Remember to salt everything you eat. Aw, heck. Just eat the salt straight from the box......

Good luck with the test.

Don't laugh too much at all this.... it'll probably lower your blood pressure.....

Re: How to raise blood pressure

Seriously, I just thought of another one, that works and won't hurt you.

Take some pseudofed--the little red decongestants.

I went to the doctor once for a sinus infection and my BP was like 170/100 and she asked me if I was taking pseudofed and I said, "I'm popping them like candy to try and get rid of these headaches." She was pretty alarmed and told me to stop taking it immediately and prescribed another decongestant. She told me that pseudofed has a tendancy to raise the BP.

There you go. No charge. grin.gif

Re: How to raise blood pressure

How low is it?? If you have HYPOtension (low blood pressure) you could be in a position where the police service is concerned about liabilities to your health and to them as your employer. When the blood pressure is too low, there is inadequate blood flow to the heart, brain, and other vital organs. When you are in a physical situation, you NEED that blood to deliver the necessary oxygen to your heart, brain and organs at higher levels than normal because it's being used at a faster rate. In physically active and stressful situations such as those faced by police officers in the line of duty, you could be putting yourself at risk, and in some situations could put your fellow cops, and others, at risk should your body not function the way it needs to in a physical confrontation.

I would consult with your physician and, if it's an option, get a written clearance from him, that your blood pressure poses no risk to you in heavily physical situations.

You can raise your BP temporarily by taking salt tablets, and drinking sufficient amounts of water. And like Tominator says, decongestants are notorious for raising BP. One of the reasons that salt is considered bad for some people with hypertension (high BP) is that salt causes water to be retained in the blood stream putting added pressure on the arteries. By taking prescribed diuretics, people with hypertension are able to eliminate much of that excess water form their systems.

High blood pressure spikes caused by anger are highly temporary, and don't generally contribute to the level of your normal sustained bloodpressure levels.

I was diagnosed with hypertension when I was 33. With my doctor's guidance, I am treating it and making the lifestyle changes to keep it in check. Without the treatment, it would most likely be the contributing factor to my eventual premature death - most likely from heart disease or stroke.

While you are on the other end of the blood pressure spectrum, it's still not something you want to handle lightly.

Seriously... talk to your doctor.
