Baseball: Gambling vs. 'roids

Why is it that if you get busted for steroids in baseball, you start out with a 10-game suspension--yet if you gamble (even betting on your own team), you're out for life?

I don't get it. Both are bad judgment--but one is clearly cheating. These guys juicing up makes me sick and they should be booted forever.

If it wasn't for what the Brewers were trying to do to achieve success, I'd have checked out of the sport a long time ago. Baseball used to be a game of strategy and teams got better by developing their talent. You don't see that much these days at all with the juiced longball taking out the concept of manufacturing runs.

heres my opinion...gambling...shouldn't be allowed...you can bet against your own team and throw the game if you had to....Steroids...i could care less if player do them or not...they aren't hurting anyone but themselves. your not going to catch and suspend every single player..steroids are going to be around no matter what...so i say let em have at it...as far as i'm concered...i'm getting my money's worth when i go to a baseball game and see some guy who is supossedly on steroids hit two home runs....remember...the steroid users are the ones you are going to find in the gym 7 days a week working out...you don't just take them (or inject them) and sit at home and get big....they still have to lift and run. so again...i say let em keep doing it...i'm not paying $30 for a baseball game to see people walk and hit singles all day smile.gif

You must be a fan of the American League. I would much rather see guys with natural skills get on base, get moved over with a sacrifice, and score on a single, then see a steroid injected cheater win the game with a home run. That's baseball, the way it was meant to be played. If you want to see a home run derby - buy tickets for the All Star break. Steriods are illegal - period. They should not be allowed to use them, just like they should not be allowed to smoke crack. Letting everyone have the same priviledge of using steroids would not "level the playing field" because the ones who actually care about their long term health would be smart enough to not use them - legal or not.

Hey, who let you out of the political forum? grin.gif

I don't know Marky, but here's my take on your question. With steroids, there's no guarantee you will jack 3 balls out on a given night. With gambling, you can easily throw a game. It's a matter of extremity IMHO.

Now, how do I feel? Personally, a cheater is a cheater and I think they ought to be banned too. Makes me think back to the Strawberry days. That dude had some problems and yet baseball kept letting him back in, time after time.

I saw on ESPN this morning that Selig wants to make the penalties stiffer. He wants 50 games, then 100, then banned for life for steroid users. I think that's more than fair.

Who cares anymore. Almost half of the NFL gambles on football....thats right. Tell me that there arnt a ton of players putting $ in fantasy football leagues. Everyone cheats in todays sports world. Oh well, let them, sports is meant to be entertaining and watching a juiced up right fielder hit a 500 foot homer is entertaining. Its our past time.

The National League is belting more home runs than the American League so I'm not quite sure what you meant there. Other than that I agree with everything you said. Steroids are illegal and there is no place for them in any sport. Users should be booted from the game.

They tried to lock me in, but somehow I found my way ooot....LOL. I actually posted about Congress looking into it a while back.

Maybe it shouldn't bother me, but this just really ticks me off about baseball. You made a good point about gambling...I don't think it should be allowed. Don't take me wrong, but like what you said about extremity....I agree totally.

After the last strike, it took me a long time to get back into baseball. It took a new stadium and new league for the Brewers to get me back to the ballpark. With what GM Doug Melvin and Manager Ned Yost have done for this club, it's reinstilled my love for baseball--in its purest form.

I love to see Geoff Jenkins out there in right field. A guy who has been here forever and will probably be here forever. A guy like Brady Clark who got hot as a pinch hitter last year and now is playing awesome baseball. A guy like Carlos Lee who not only has brought some power to the club, but player leadership that was lacking.

Now when I turn on ESPN or whatever and all I hear about baseball is steroids, it just makes me sick. Enough to leave the game I love again--probably not--but enough to really make me wonder what records matter.

I guess I won't really blow my top considering things like what Lyle Overbay did a few nights ago. He had the green light to swing away, but sacrifice bunted someone to third to help manufacture a run.

Maybe I'm a jerk like that, but these guys--in all sports--are supposed to be athletes. The best of the best sports has to offer. I not only think that those who cheat with steroids should be banned, but those who are out snorting coke, shooting up, and smoking dope. There is no place for that in athletics.

I can even see with addictions giving them a second chance...but 3rd, 4th, and 5th chances? I don't think so.

Good Lord, it is so hard to get off of my soapbox sometimes. I almost broke into another paragraph of ranting. I'll shut up now...LOL
