Squirrelhunter91
So far this year, has anybody seen any bucks w/o velvet yet or with the velvet hanging off? I want to get a pic of a buck this year with the velvet hanging off its antlers or with the rack all bloody after losing it. Anyone? Anyone? One more thing, what happens to the velvet after they lose it? Do they eat it? That's what I read somewhere..

Tominator
Re: Velvetless bucks? I read an article once that had some guy that studied when deer dropped their velvet. What he came up with was that deer in his area (New York) deer shed their velvet in the first week of September. From what I remember in the article the author noted some deer eating their velvet, but most of it is just dropped on the ground or rubbed off on trees. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Velvetless bucks? Yep, they'll definitely eat it. I saw a home video a friend of mine took a couple of years ago of a buck rubbing, then chewing the velvet. I assume he swallowed it.

VTbowman
Re: Velvetless bucks? Vermonthunter said he saw a nice buck in my hunting properties front field the other day with velvet hanging off it. I thought it sounded early for that but I guess not. VtBowhunter
Re: Velvetless bucks? I saw a big 10 point in New York last friday and he had no velvet left. Deer DO eat their velvet.......they eat it to get the protein from it. In the spring they also raid birdnests that are built too low and eat fish on shores for protein.
