tedicast
We just lost power. I went to reboot my Dell, and it won't boot. Tried booting in safe mode...no dice! I have a blue screen that says UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME. I'm on hold with Dell as I type this. I have a funny feeling this is going to be bad! Thankfully it isn't my only computer! I just hope the hard drive isn't fried. I have a ton of pics on it that I never backed up.

VermontHunter
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This isn't going to be good at all.... ,,,,John's fears of the hard drive may be realality unfortunately,,for his sake I'm hoping it's just a bio's glitch.......man you really need to invest in a power back-up,,they aren't that expensive any longer.....I got my UPS with 4 hours of run time and safe shutdown for about $99.00 at TigerDirect...and it's saved my computer on countless times.... Hope all is well there buddy...
BowtechTurkeyHunter
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hepefully you get a resourcefull Dell help desk because they will want you to put your rebuild disk in and all your data will be gone but if you get a resourceful one he may tell you how to fix the boot sector on you HD. [/ QUOTE ] Thanks Billy... Well..I'm back up and running, for now. At least I can back up all my data. I will have a new HD from Dell on Tuesday. Now the fun part, reinstalling everything. Luke...you better give me your phone number...I'm probably gonna need it!!! Another question...I have to send this HD back to Dell. They told me if I physically damaged the HD, I would be charged for it. How can I be sure all my info is wiped from it before I return it? tedicast
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [ QUOTE ] Hammers... Water.... Hammers again.... [/ QUOTE ] That was my intention, but I don't want to be charged for it. If it comes to having to pay for a HD, I'm sure I could find one for hald of what Dell will charge me. I was going to drill holes through it to disable it...lol
VTbowman
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yea power tools!!!! If you do a complete install of your operating system it should erase everything and put it back to factory settings, like day 1. If you can power it up and load the dics that is. Its what Luke and I tried on my old Compaq but I had damaged OS discs so we transfered it all to a slave HD and scrapped the C drive. Then I bought a new Dell. VermontHunter
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL....after you have saved everything that you need,,,,Just reformat the dang thing like 10 times,,,,that will take care of that..... Re-installing is pretty easy John,,as long as you have all of the software DELL sent with the system,,just takes time that's all...

[ QUOTE ] Re-installing is pretty easy John,,as long as you have all of the software DELL sent with the system [/ QUOTE ] The tech went throug all the discs I had, and it seemed I was missing one. He said he is sending a complete set of re-install discs for my computer, along with the HD, and a new cable.
VermontHunter
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! John,,I would say that DELL has you all set and good to go then.....man usually they send a tech to the house to install the new drive and operating system,,,but hey you got a new drive and software taboot can't kick on that.... VTbowman
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those discs aint cheap so take good care fo them. Right Luke... LOL
tedicast
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They wanted to send a tech to the house. It would have been a pain, because I work 1/2 hour away, and Jen works 40 minutes away. To try and set up someone being here for a tech, would have been impossible. Plus the tech was gonna take my old HD, and I want to be sure it is erased before I give it back.
VermontHunter
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL..if you want that HD destroyed for good just take an old power cord and hook it up to the HD and plug it into the wall.... ,,bye bye everything.... tedicast
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will it be obvious by looking at it what happened to it? I was thinking that too.
VermontHunter
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOPE,,,,,that's what I did to one they replaced,,,all I had to do is reset the breaker that it tripped... Don't be gentle with that old drive either bang that puppy around but good, without damaging the outer case,,,if any one wants info off that drive they'll have to work for it.... tedicast
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll bring it to work with me, and give it a little shock...lol Should i chock the power cable goes, or where athe SATA cable goes
VermontHunter
Re: NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Power cables have a better and heavier current flow.. SATA to me is too thin to carry that amount of current flow..
