VTbowman
I had a nice 3 hour nature walk with my 2 kids up around my hunting property yesterday. Its an annual trip for the 3 of us and I take the time to post the land while I am at it. I always hated the dreaded yellow sign, (white back in the day) when I was not a land owner. But I now see the logic in posting after a couple years of hard work and hunts were washed down the tubes by less then friendly or respectful local hunters. I was also told its smart to post since you can be sued over injuries obtained by people out on your land if you know they are there or not. (At least in VT.) I dont need that headache. So the signs go up every season this time of year and I turned it into a nice walk with my kids. We even saw some nice looking doe up in the woods and a few out in the fields. Do you post yours or not, and why?
VermontHunter
Re: Posting your land? LOL...so Shawn how long would it take to take to post my hunting piece ??? I think you remember the acreage, and you already know why ??.....Dang some people can be real darn stupid at times.....
VTbowman
Re: Posting your land? I could of done mine in less then an hour if it were not for the kids. But we went slow and had to flip every rock and old log on the way. ' And you know how many that can be up in my woods. Yikes! LOL
snapper
Re: Posting your land? Yes...I post our land. Mainly because of the house...if someone were to come in from the back side, they would never know the house is there. With a log house, it tends to blend in alittle and really don't want anyone shooting my house. The other reason...I've always wanted to be able to walk around or even sit and hunt without seeing someone else. That can be hard to find here in PA on ground that isn't posted. VtBowhunter
Re: Posting your land? Posted up tighter the a frog's backside. We started to when 3 cows came up missing and we found one without hind quarters, one whole with a bullet in it and one with the hide hanging in the trees. No ask, no hunt.........Shawn you were one of the lucky few, lol.
Strut10
Re: Posting your land? I started with "By Permission Only" and gave it to everyone who asked. But due to an overabundance of idiots and stupidity by the PGC, my portion of the Strut10 Ranch is O-F-F off limits to any and all unless I approach them. You know.........don't call me, I'll call you. I lock it down completely during the general fireams season for deer. I don't even go on my property then. And I'd throw my own mother off if she did. It takes me several hours of real hustling to get the signs freshened up.
Tominator
Re: Posting your land? I have a whopping 3 acres out back, and no, it's not posted, but I think I will have to soon since a couple idiots started tresspassing on my neighbor last year. The 2 new guys just built houses on some adjacent property, and I guess they think all the land around them is fair game. I know they didn't ask for permission because my neighbor asked me if I lost some shells Huh? I guess he found some empty and live shells laying back by his barn so he asked me. Nope, not mine, I shoot a 20, these are 12's, plus he knows I'm not that kind of guy. So I tattled on his neighbors. I told him that I watched his neighbors walk right through his land and down his fencerow and tresspassed on at least 5 landowners in the span of 1/2 hour. I'm quite certain those dudes will hunt my field one of these days. Sorry for the rant, what was the question?
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Posting your land? Works a little differently in Texas. If the land is fenced and the gate is locked, it's automatically posted. We put up a couple of signs that read "Trespassers will be shot, survivors will be prosecuted". Don't have any problems! That, and knowing our local game warden wont do a thing either unless he can get ya from his truck.
Hoosierbuck
Re: Posting your land? "I was also told its smart to post since you can be sued over injuries obtained by people out on your land if you know they are there or not. " Many states have addressed this. Indiana, for instance, has a landowner liability protection statute that is good. Supposed to prevent being sued for just about everything but an intentiional, malicious act. I don't know how effective it is, but it's got to be better than nothing!! HB
Doc
Re: Posting your land? Here's the way it worked on my property. Years ago, I gave permission for some friends from work to hunt with me on my property. Before long, they were out there hunting by themselves without my knowledge. Next they started inviting their friends and relatives. After a while the original ones who had permission were hunting elsewhere but the friends and relatives and all their friends were still there. By the time a few years passed, all these strangers were hunting my land, and assuming that they all had permission to do so. This wasn't just one isolated incident either involving just one of my hunting acquaintances, but happened in 3 separate cases. The same thing happened to my Dad on his property. Now, nobody has permission to hunt my property. All these other bogus tresspassers have been kicked off, the land has been sealed up tighter than a drum, and there are no more invitations extended. People have a way of just taking advantage of a situation. It won't happen again. Doc
VTbowman
Re: Posting your land? I have 4 guys and myself who hunt and never all at the same time. 1 is my brother and 2 are forum members here. (Vermonthunter and BobD) A 4th is a traditional forum friend that also lives in VT and is the only guy I know who shoots trad in VT. I naturally extended the offer since he hasn't any place to shoot no less hunt. During rifle season that number drops to 3 guys with me being 1 of them. No outside friends or family of my friend are allowed. Its only a 100 acre piece with 40% of it open fields.

JimT
Re: Posting your land? I do not have enough land to post, but if I did I would not post it unless something drastic happened. Mabe if I found litter on a constant basis I would also. In that case I would post it no tresspassing without permission, but I would give the people that I think I can trust permission to hunt it. I could deal with some blown hunts, after all chances are they are not ruining a hunt on purpose. I suppose I could post it "Access by permission only, unless you an anti hunter. In which case beat it!"
Strut_Buster
Re: Posting your land? My dad and I make the round every year to make sure all the signs are still up. Seems like 1 or 2 get shot by road hunters or neighbors every year. oh well, gives me something to do.
wtnhunt
Re: Posting your land? Used to post it, but the signs always get torn or shot down. The law here requires hunters to have written permission by the landowner of a property whether the land is posted or not.

buckshot
Re: Posting your land? I post our property about every 3 yrs.It takes alot of work and money (especially if I buy the plastic signs)because 3 roads run through our 140acres.Don't have too much trouble with trespassers anymore since I had a few arrested a few yrs back.
