Our hunting club has a few posted signs on some gates but that's about it. Fortunately our 3,000 acres is almost totally surrounded by other hunting clubs so trespassers have been few and far between. In 15 years we've only caught 3 and had one prosecuted. Never saw him again. The other 2 were given a stiff warning and a call was made to the owner and they haven't been around for several years either. They were hunting a 100 acre tract that borders us that is the only piece of property that's not in a hunting club bordering us. That property was clear cut 5 years ago so I guess they gave up trying to hunt in that jungle. The rest of our neighbors are great and we all get along and cooperate with each other. I post my land not to be an mean but I work too hard making food plots and stuff & my hunting time is too valueable to have poachers & tresspassers run deer off. The first year I got my lease to hunt I didn't post it. The season started Sept 1st but I didn't find out until the middle of November that a party of coon hunters were hunting on my land UNDER my deer stands and along trails in the woods. I found out they were tresspassing because they would build camp fires at night & leave beer cans around the camp fires. They knew I was hunting that land & they knew it was a lease I had. We haven't had a problem with people coming on it as of yet. All though the sign "Tresspassers will be shot and buried" helps somewhat. Even before I had a lease, I was not bothered by individuals who post property. Many times, they just wanted to know who would be on their property and were very willing to let you in to hunt, so long as you asked permission. It's just smart business if you ask me. A trick I learned off of a retired game warden in FL is to take along a can of spray paint and put a mark under your sign. Here in montana you don't need signs all you have to do is paint the top foot or so of the fence post at all the entrances to the property and it is post. Most ranchers still paint a post every so often just to help get the point across. I've only seen one guy trespasing before and when he saw me coming he took off like as fast as he could. The game wardens are good about catching trespassers but they can only do so much. In the county where I live there are only two wardens and the county I live in is probably 100miles by 50 miles so that a lot of land for two guys to control.
