accubond vs silvertips

I have not used either but FYI there is a great write up in last months Field and Stream magazine that shows Pro's and Con's to each type of projectile, how they are made, what to use them on, etc.

They even show a cut away of how the bullet is made.

Very informative.

BTW I favored the AccuBond in that write up along with the Swift Scirocco, both in 180g.

But I shoot a .300 Ultra Mag (Remington 700)

i deer hunt with a remington 270 model 700. i've been using 145 gr silvertip ballistic shells....i was wondering if anyone has used the accubond shells and how well do they work, i've had good luck with the other confused.gif

I shoot Winchester BSTs in my 7mm Mag but the only problem is the bullet is so fast it isn't good at shooting game under 100 yards with that calibur. It doesn't expand enough at short distances. I shot 2 nice bucks, both right behind the shoulder at about 90 yards with the BTS & both deer ran 200 yards before finally dying.

I also read a recent article about a hunter using a .270 with Remington's Ultra Core Lokt bullet. He shot an Elk with that round at 200 yards & the animal dropped in its tracks.

Thats what I shoot in my 06, the fartherest I've had a deer to run is 20 yards. I shot a 9 point last December just behind the shoulder & the impact shattered his front left leg. That bullet has some serious knock down power, penetration & expantion.

Re: accubond vs silvertips

They are similar bullets. Both are made by Nosler. The Ballistic Silvertip is just a different colored Ballistic Tip. It opens up fairly fast and can shed its jaket. The Accubond's core is bonded to the jacket and has a slightly thicker jacket to make it hold together better, offering slightly deeper penetration. Its still not a Partition or A-Frame, but its the best of both worlds. I like them in the fast shooting magnums. The .270 Win is not a fast shooting magnum so either one will work.

Re: accubond vs silvertips

IMHO...........If you're shooting deer with a .270, you don't need any sort of a bonded bullet or controlled expansion. I'd go with a regular old (i.e. way cheaper) Hornady, Speer or Sierra spitzer in 130 gr. or 150 gr. Even Winchester Power Points or Remington Core-Lokts will do ya just fine. wink.gif

Yep.Ballistic tips will ruin more meat grin.gif.For deer you don't really need the accubond.I think it is designed more for super fast magnums, mule deer,elk,etc..You may want the accubond for extremely grassy, brushy or thick country.Wherever there may be a great chance of your bullet hitting something before it reaches the target.I have had a winchester ballistic silvertip hit a pine tree then explode.Luckily the deer was 1 foot behind the sapling. There were 6 entrance holes 2 were large.I found the jacket in his heart, but the core was never to be found.I have not ever had this happen before,or after. They are built to explode.Like AJ said with faster guns, they tend to penetrate less before they disintegrate.I use 150gr Winchester power points in my .30-06 some of the time too,and they work great. My friend uses the 130gr power points in his .270,and has never had a bad experience with them. What's even better is you can find them almost anywhere, and they generally cost less than $15.
