The New Impala SS

As most of you know, I'm a mechanic at a GM Dealership. Anyways, I was working away on a truck, and I hear what I thought was a Corvette pull into the shop. It was the detailer bringing in a car off the truck to get it cleaned up. I looked over and it wasn't a Corvette, it was a 2006 Chevy Impala SS! blush.gif I kept going about my work, and finished my job. By this time, the car was cleaned and was ready for it's PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection). This is when a mechanic looks the whole car over, and then takes it for a road test before it's put on the lot. In the road test we basically have to drive it like we stole it. Accelerate hard, brake hard. Anyways, I went over to my foreman's desk to get my next workorder, and he's like "Here Shaun, do this PDI for me eh?" I thought, pleeeeeaaassseee be that Impala SS! grin.gif Sure enough, it was! cool.gif I have never driven a car as fast as this thing. Under the hood is a 5.3L, 327ci V8 producing 303HP. I couldn't believe the price! $35,000 (Canadian) A LOT lower than what I expected. If you folks are lookin' for a quick car, definetly take one of these out for a spin. wink.gif

Here's what it looks like! cool.gif

Ya gotta love those 18 inch rims with the 235/50/R18 tires on it too! tongue.gif

Re: The New Impala SS

I think the old one looked better.

You know, I've been a GM man all my life because my dad's a GM retiree, but IMHO, GM is missing the boat and not going retro with the GTO and now the Impala.

Those old GTO's and Impalas are one of the hottest and most sought after oldy cars out there, and GM designed another Grand Am with the GTO and another Cavalier with the Impala.

C'mon GM, have you guys seen the new mustang and T-birds?

Buy a clue.

Re: The New Impala SS

spyder, unfortunately it's front wheel drive. I tell ya! 303 horsepower is pushing it for a front wheel drive car. crazy.gif The front is pretty darn light when ya nail on 'er off the start! grin.gif

007, I took it up to about 150k (95mph) and boy did it get there quick! grin.gif

I can't wait to drive the new Monte Carlo SS, its the exact same look as the Impala, but it's a two door. wink.gif

Re: The New Impala SS

Well it is definitely an improvement over the last generation model. Guys, in case you didn't know, they are not bringing this back, they have been producing them for years, this is just a new model. Tominator, the new T-birds aren't selling well at all. I think manufacturers are missing the boat with a lot of the cars they are bringing back, like the GTO, the Charger, and the like. People aren't gonna like them as much b/c they don't look like the old ones. I think they should do a limited-edition reproduction of some of the muscle cars, with almost the same bodies but with some modern features. Begin with the 'Cuda, Challenger,Chevelle, and the like. At least they are offering some good-performing cars now, back in the 80's everything was slow just about. Hey Shaun, is it true that Chevy is bringing the Camaro back as a 2007 model? I have heard some rumors...

I have to agree with you Tominator. That car has nothing on the early to mid 60's Impala SS's. Come on, its front wheel drive!!!!! A muscle car can't be front wheel drive!!!!

I gotta agree with you two!! I think the new Impala SS is a good looking car. But I've always felt it was a travesty to put the "SS" moniker on a 4-door. mad.gif Someone should be flogged with a roller camshaft for that!!

Thought you might appreciate a pic of one of the "old fashioned" Impalas. Although, not an SS (just a Sport Coupe), this car had acceleration that actually could make people sick in the stomach.........I mean puking sick!! shocked.gif It's a '67 396 car and the last one I ever owned. Built it to be a 1/4 mile monster and succeeded. She'd go 12.80 at around 112 mph on D.O.T. approved tires with 75 feet of posi-traction wheelspin off the line (NO WAY to hook her up without slicks). She weighed 4050 lbs. dry & empty and seated 6 adults comfortably. 5 m.p.g. highway on 115 octane fuel. Other than the 2 1/2" tailpipes, you could not tell it from Grandma's car...........until you turned the key!! grin.gifgrin.gif

Re: The New Impala SS

As for the new Camaro that picture has been going around but its not a GM release. There is no talk of debuting a new Camaro......yet. I work in the automotive field on future vehicles and there is no talk about bring back the Camaro or the Trans Am. Right now the company looks at numbers and how many they could sell. The market has to be there to justify production.

GTO numbers are low and the Camaro and Trans Am had better numbers before their demize. If the GTO would have only went the way of the 65 to 67 era or even the egg shaped 68 to 70 model years. New one is a cross between a Grand Am and Grand Prix. They missed the boat on the retro theme that other auto makers are doing (PT Cruiser and the Mustand). The new GTO should of had the tach in the hood and even a "Judge" package available with the stripes!!

Got that right. That new Impala looks like a Lumina. Didn't Chevy scrap the Lumina?

Sorry, don't mean to pound the thread Shaun. Us old timers remember all the old Chevy SS's
