Montgomery, 26, of Willoughby, Ohio was killed in Hiditha, Iraq while conducting combat operations. His brother served in the same company. His brother was sent home to escort his brothers body. He was not going to be coming back to Iraq anytime soon. He didn't want to leave, he wanted to stay there and finish out the job. Once back at his unit in Ohio and after the funeral procedings, they kept him on active duty for a short time (they were both reservists). Well I guess they figured out that he still needed to qualify this year on the rifle range. Well just so happened that this weekend, we were taking our reservists to the rifle range. So being that we were his parent command, they flew him out here to Mass to shoot with us. Well I was one of the coaches and he just happened to be one of my shooters. His brother was always an expert shooter and he was always a marksman. His brother used to get on him all the time for not shooting as good as he did. After his brother died, he promised his brothers wife that he would take her to the Marine Corps Ball this November. His brothers wife...jokingly...said "I will not go to the Marine Corps Ball with a marksman so you better shoot expert when you go out there to Mass to shoot with the Marines out there". Needless to say, he told me this story before he qualified. A lot of pressure put on my shoulders for sure. Long story short, he shot expert for the first time and as he walked off the line after he qualified, he looked at me and said "Thank you Staff Sergeant, big bro would of been proud". He was always talking about his brother so you know it still hurts pretty bad. I can't believe they even sent him over here just to shoot. I mean his Brother was just killed several weeks ago. I think he just wanted to get back to the swing of things. It happened the day before those 14 Marines were hit in that amtrak. He has a good head on his shoulders, I know that.
