WISHUNTER
Hi All, I'm sure this as been ask but I have never seen it so here goes. Who got you started into Bowhunting? Do you still hunt with that person? If it's a person that has passed on, Do you say a prayer and thank that person on the first day you are sitting in the stand for taken the time for getting you there? If the person still here and you don't hunt with him or her do you call that person and say thanks at the begining of the season? Are you helping any one else get into this sport? Just asking.... Someone today ask me who got me into to bowhunting, I told them I did. No one bowhunted in my family I learned on my own. But I do have to thank my Mom and Dad for buying all my gear to get me started in this great sport. That was 18 years ago

Griz
Re: Who got you? Back when I was a young pup my dad use to hunt with a long bow. At the age of 5 my dad started teaching how to shoot and hunt. The long bow was so long. the bottom limb would rest on the ground and I couldn't pull it back. My dad had bought another bow and had it cut down so that I could shoot it. I would shoot that long bow for hours. To this day I still shoot a bow. But it's a compound now. As far as my dad goes. No he doesn't shoot or hunt anymore because of his health. And yeah I thank God everyday for just being able to have a dad like mine, for teaching me about the great outdoors back when I was young... MadHuntinPastor
Re: Who got you? My brother in law gave me his old bow and I went out and missed a ton of deer with it for two straight years.....then got a new bow and killed the first doe I saw. That was two seasons ago. Took another doe last year and lookin to peg a nice buck this year. Loving every minute of it. I also got to return the favor last year. I let Harvdog hunt with an extra bow I had. I told him if he took a deer with it....he could have it. Sure enough he drilled a deer (ask him where ) and now he is a deer killin machine. He is 74 years old an dstill pulls a 50 pound combo back and nails it everytime. As a matter of fact I thanked him yesterday while we were practicing. We have a excellent hunting relationship and i teach hime new techniques as well as learn from him some of the old ways, that actually work better. I thank god for people like him and all of us. BowJoe
Re: Who got you? I was just metioning in another post today that my friends Chuck and Brandt got me into bowhunting about 9 yrs ago. I went hunting with Brandt one icey snowcovered day in the middle of January. He was in his Summit and I was hidden on the ground behind a dead fall. He had two button bucks come in about 15 yds away and he stood to shoot. He missed the first shot, but then he nailed the button buck with a sharp quarting away shot which let him travel only 30 yds. From that morning on, I was hooked. I had never seen something so awe-inspiring in my life. I then went hunting with Chuck a few weeks later and again he was in a stand and I was on the ground using my first bow. A Golden Eagle Talon. I saw does before first light and then at dawn I saw a basket rack 8. When we met back up, Chuck had downed a coyote. As it lay in the field, I could see where the blood trail began and I paced it back to his stand. 46 yds give or take a yard. He didn't brag, he just hunted. He is 70 now and still out does me at every turn. He's old school and proves everyday that new ain't always better or easier. Brandt, Chuck and myself have all hunted together for years and will continue to do so as long as each of us can. I have thanked them for all of the lessons I learn and continue to learn. I think my thank you is said not by me but by the long nights of discussion we have almost everytime we get together much like we do here on the modern version of the deer campfire. Tominator
Re: Who got you? I took archery as a PE elective in college where a friend of mine saw me while working for the PE department. He asked me if I bowhunted and I said no so he offered to take me out. That was fall of 1997, been hooked ever since. Yep, I still keep in touch with him, he's a great friend. This is a picture of Shawn and I last year out in Illinois. Shawn is on the left, my other good bowhunting buddy ohiobucks took the picture.
Adjam5
Re: Who got you? I grew up in NYC, no hunting opportunities there in the big city. WE had a summmer home that we used to shoot skeet at with Grand dads .410. I have that gun today. That was my 1st introduction to guns and shooting. Fast forward... Summer of 85, my cousins husband who is a big hunter invites me to his cabin to hunt. I take the course and go...I LOVED IT! I loved it soo much I now own a Lifetime Archery license and a lifetime Sportsman license for NY state. I went 6 years without tagging a deer. After that...I get 2 sometimes 3, 4 and 5 some years! I started bow hunting about 4 years ago when taking deer with the gun became too easy. I looked for more of a challenge. Did I ever get one! The bow is now my preferred weapon for deer. Next is a yote and turkey with the bow. Anyway, my cousin and her husband got divorced, it was a messy one. So my Uncle issued a edict of not to interact with Gary at all...he was out of the circle And you know once your out of the circle ...your out! I haven't talked to him since the divorce in 96. But since then, I moved to a NYC suburb 40 miles from the big city(deer in my backyard), I have gotten my 3 sons ALL into the outdoors. 2 of which have taken their hunter saftey courses. They have bows, pellet guns and we shoot our bows just about every night after dinner. My dream one day is to do a hunt in Alaska with all my sons.
