Re: Off to blast some doves...

Well, the trip last Thursday was a bust. We saw very few birds.

Since the hurricane fizzled in my part of the state, I decided to go ahead and make the 200 mile trip to the deer lease over the weekend. It was a dove slaughter!!!!

The rancher had his annual "invite the bankers and lawyers" day on Saturday. They started showing up around 3:30 and about 4:30 the birds started flying. We started out hunting a 200 acre sunflower field that had just been plowed. The birds would come swooping in over a treeline, fly through a barrage of shotgun blasts, and land out in the plowed field and go to feeding. I watched everybody shoot for awhile from a shady spot in my jeep. It was pretty obvious that a lot of those boys didn't get out too often. Of the 2000 or so birds that flew in, I'd say about 1950 of them landed safely. grin.gif

About 6:00, I headed over to a pond that was a couple of miles north of the field. There were several banker/lawyer types already there. I asked them how it was going, and they said they'd only seen 5 or 6 doves. I told them to get ready, because they were about to be overrun with birds. I could tell they didn't really believe me, but I went over to the other side of the pond and set up about 150 yards from the water where I'd have a good seat for the show! smile.gif

Between 6:00 and 6:30, not much happened, but then it was like you flipped a switch and the skies filled up! They were coming in groups of 5 to 20 birds and there was no way to keep your shotgun loaded and the birds picked up! I had my 15 bird limit in about 30 minutes, and most of that time was spent looking for dead ones. If it were legal, and I had a good enough retreiver, I could have easily killed a hundred doves in an hour! Definitely the best shoot I've had this year. You can bet that I'll be heading back out there next weekend. laugh.gif
