Winded!

No not breaking wind... crazy.gifsmirk.gif LOL

I got winded my opening morning. frown.gif

I was hunting the bottom of a prodominate notch the deer have a heavy trail on. At the bottm of it, it splits into 2 trails, but lucky me I have a huge triple trunk pine tree at 15 yards of one trail and 12 from the other. Awesome cover inside the 3 trunks and the wind, I thought, was in my face.

The notch starts well above my line of sight and drops steeply down for a good 50 yards then to a lesser slope where the trails go by my triple trunk. Then slopes more gentally to the field edge 40 yards behind me.

I see 5 fat doe snake down the top right side of this notch and stop 1/2 way down, about 40 yards away, mill around a bit and then sneak back up the left side to the log road I have other stands on. crazy.gif

I hit the Primos Lil Can in hopes of drawing them back in, when I notice a 6th doe walking the trail that runs right to left along the bottom of the entire hill side at 10 yard from my stand.

Now, I left a thick wall of maple sapplings between the stand and the notch for cover from the higher advantage deer could have coming down the notch, with my shooting lanes at a 45* angles right and left of the stand.

So wouldn't ya know the doe was standing on the other side of this "wall". 9 yards away and no shot. So thick were the maple leaves that I could barely see her fur and absolutely no shape to her size or body.

She gets directly between me and the notch and stops. I see her do some sort of body shake and looked like she reached back to nibble something on her left shoulder. Then stood there for what seemed like hours.

I was still standing and motionless from the other 5 deer, not 2 mintues before, so I was ready with bow in hand.

All of a sudden she ran foward and out of all shooting possiblities for my long bow. frown.gif

Thats huntin I guess but I can not think of why 6 deer busted me when there is no way they saw me and I was sure to not move. Plus I was in a gillie suit as well.

It must of been swirling winds on the side of that slope and notch since it was blowing pretty good all day long.

Re: Winded!

It could of also been the fact that you used the Can call and those does were focused in on your position and not seeing a real deer. I've seen plenty of deer spook in those situations.

It hit the call after they left not before. I rarely put any stock into these calls but gave it a desperate try.

JB-

The stand is actuall 1/2 way to the top of this hill side with this notch having a deer trail like a cow path running down it. The top of it is a log road then it goes even higher up.

There was an old platform stand in this tree from years ago so I thought I would try it.

I was expecting the deer to be coming from the field level and up this trail to the bedding areas they use on the high ground based on years of sightings and scouting.

I also have other tree stands up on said high ground too just could not make it to them before legal light.

I was actuall shocked to see deer coming down this in the AM, but heck, I went with it. smirk.gif LOL

Thanks to all... cool.gif
