I work 12 hour shift and I LOVE it.I work every other weekend,never more than 3 shifts in arow(unless you work O.T. or an exchange) so that works out to only 15 shifts a month. browning_gold_12 Posted October 7, 2005 Report Share Posted October 7, 2005 Re: How many work shift work? firefighter here, 24hrs on 48hrs off. 7am shift change. 1 vacation day, gets you 5 days off. 4day vac gets you 8 off, 7 gets 11, 10 gets 14 so on. in nov, i got down 12 days worth of vac, and i am off 20 days straight. I've worked them for 6 years and hate it with a vengeance, and would give anything to be back on straight days....like Snapper.........seema like I'm working every important day like holidays and birthdays.....I'm missing my kids grow up, plus it is hard...extrememly hard on the body...... My wife and I have discussed it, and it looks like April 1st, 2006 is my last day regardless of what happens.......my family and health are more important than the job....... [/ QUOTE ] My job pays well enough that my wife can stay at home.......but all four of my kids are 6 and under.....when I'm on nights I get little to no sleep, and when I'm on days I'm only home to eat and sleep.......and then my off days are spent doing all of the odd things I couldn't do while I was pulling shift..... Nope.....for me, straight 8's is where I gotta go.......but you're right, it takes all kinds.....several of the guys I work with, love shift work and 12's.....I'm just not one of them....... Usually work 7-3:30 or so, but my schedule is pretty flexible seeing as how I make it myself, however I am on call pretty well 24-7.
