Palssonater
I've hunted deer for about 10 years now and these last couple years I have noticed that I have developed an allergy to deer hair. I can't even touch the stuff or else my hands get covered in hives and my eyes water and throat gets scratchy. This is really annoying when I have to clean. Luckily I have friends who don't mind. Regardless I normally have latex gloves and a dust mask in the truck incase no one is arround. I never used to have this problem and actually used to have a deer hide on the couch. Is anyone else allergic to deer hide? Or has anyone else ever developed allergies? I didn't think they could just "show up"

tedicast
Re: Deer Hair Allergy It doesn't happen to me all the time, but a few deer I have touched have made my eyes get styes, and make me have trouble breathing. Certain cats and dogd do this to me too, but not all of them. I don't know why.
AaronS
Re: Deer Hair Allergy I've noticed this happening to me too the past few years. For me it is mostly runny eyes and sneezing leading to my eyes swelling to almost shut. I've started taking Clariton every morning, wearing latex gloves when field-dressing, and carrying baby wipes in my pack to clean up afterwards. It helps. Palssonater
Re: Deer Hair Allergy [ QUOTE ] Hmmmmmmmmmmm *note to self* fake deer hair allergy so buddies take care of dressing deer. [/ QUOTE ] They accused me of that till I showed them! If I was faking I would have one an Oscar. Eyes swole up, tears streaming and dangerously flailing with the knife due to sneezing fits! Yeah I will pop a benedryl or claritin about 20 mins before I start.
popgun
Re: Deer Hair Allergy Our deer must be hypo-allergenic. I have never even heard of anyone allergic to deer until now. I think you should give up hunting completely and leave the deer for those of us who are not allergic to them. .....popgun
Rhino
Re: Deer Hair Allergy We have 1 guy in our club with the same problem. He can't touch one either without having a severe reaction. About the only thing I can tell you is to wear rubber gloves and a dust mask over your nose and mouth if you have to handle a deer. When you're finished change cloths and put the cloths you were wearing when you handled the deer in a plastic bag. That's about all the protection I know of that will help. Nut
Re: Deer Hair Allergy I have a friend in Tennessee who developed the same allergy. He had to be rushed to the ER 2 years ago while we were hunting in Kentucky. He had killed a doe and then touched his face afterwards. OUCH. He had hunted for years before it started happening. Palssonater
Re: Deer Hair Allergy Popgun....I think that could be true. I looked into it and deer from the south have different hair thickness and types than our Canadian deer. I think it is the undercoat that gets me.
