Cows and horses vs deer

Re: Cows and horses vs deer

I used to hunt among cattle all the time and they don't seem to bother the deer.

I've seen horses chase deer though grin.gif Don't know whether they were just having fun, or the horse was trying to run it off. The deer wasn't too upset about it. grin.gif

Re: Cows and horses vs deer

well i just made a post like this tonight.. i had cows come in , and when they started looking towards my thicest place i hunt i knew something was up . you know when 4 cows stop munching grass at the same time and just stare at the woods somethings going on..

so here come 3 does with a small buck chasing them. while i didnt get a shot . i used the cows just like we listen for blue jays and squirrels . the other critters out there in the woods will let you know when somethings going on..

as for deer not likeing cows , i have seen deer right in with them , but i have also seen deer run from them . like a mature doe with yearlings to get them away from them..

if the cows are just within 40 yards or so i think its ok . but when they are right under your stand i dont like it. like this one

Re: Cows and horses vs deer

I hunt a state park with horses that are in a fences pasture. A few years back I took a video camera and grabbed one of the horses by the harness. With 3 does and 4 fawns in the fenced in area, I walked to within 20 yds of a doe and 2 fawns. I stepped out from behind the horse and stood there in a t shirt and Camo pants. The doe just looked at me for about 10 secs before she figured she'd leave. Friggin amazing to me.

Re: Cows and horses vs deer

They will use the same trails. Keep in mind that deer look for the easiest rout too. They will use cattle trails. Ive seen them do it over and over.

They will live together with no problems. My family owns a beef ranch and I have always hunted among been cattle and horses. Honestly the cattle can put a crimp in your hunting but only by feeding under your tree and not alowing the deer to come in.

From what Ive seen the larger animals have the right of way. They will not stand side by side but they still continue with an otherwise standard pattern.
