AaronS
What type of field? Is it a harvested crop field, standing corn, a pasture, or an overgrown CRP or brush field? That will make all the difference in the world.

It just depends on what type of field you are talking about. Or if you can find some well used travel routes in the woods, or between the woods and the field, that can be rewarding as well. good luck

Hillbilly
Re: woods or fields I rather hunt woods than fields. All you can see if miles and miles of corn or whatever your hunting. I think hunting a field would be boring. I rather hunt woods, and be in the buck's domain. Hunt him in his own backyard. To each his own. joebobhunter4
Re: woods or fields a lot of times i see deer in between shelterbelts where the farmer has corn on both sides of it and all you can see is maybe 3 feet on one side of the trees and 3 feet on the other... i find a lot of deer in those things

hutchies
Re: woods or fields Where I hunt most of the time there are no crops. It is just woods so I look for funnels or hunt about 50 yards off the fenclines. They act as a natural barrier and they will not cross them unless they have to. Guest TheNumber1Young1
Re: woods or fields I love the woods, when i see a deer in the field, it gets my heart pumping, but not as much as hearing crunch, crunch..........crunch crunch...I haven't had much experience hunting on fields, but i just got a muzzleloader this year, so i will be hunting fields and powerlines a lot more this year. beagleboy
Re: woods or fields I personally like hunting the woods in the morning when the deer go to their bedding areas after filling their bellies from the night before and I like to hunt the fields at night (especially if its a crop field). Love to see deer funnel into a field as sunset approaches.

Tony
Re: woods or fields i sit where i expect to get a shot at a deer. .. this statement no matter how simple it is is the facts . if you have a place that has both types of terrain then i would place stands on both types . but look for something that joins them together . like a funnel or a dry creek. i have a stand that is the best of both worlds. it is a small funnel with thick cover that is no bigger than 4 acres. but to the south is a brushy old pasture that is grown up with weeds taller than 6 feet. with the open green pasture to my north is makes a great funnel to see and take deer. plus its on a fence line that allows bucks to travel it checking on the does that have entered the green pasture.. it offers me a great view in both directions .which i like because i like to decoy and call for bucks. with the area south being open i can see bucks crusing the area over 300 yards away . and if i can see them i can call them in if they are in the right frame of mind.. bulldawg
Re: woods or fields I prefer oak ridges that are bordered by swamps. It's a natural funnel that the deer like to use for sneeking away from trouble. If I'm sitting there with the shotgun, they have found more trouble than they bargained for... That is the setup I will be using Thursday morning for the TZone opener..
Master_Chief
Re: woods or fields I try and hunt where the does are during the rut. Flexibility is key here. If the bucks are chasing does and they are crossing field I will try and be inside the edge of the woods. If the does are hesitant to enter the fields I get further back in the woods. The thicker the better.

Tominator
Re: woods or fields It's been my experience that you should hunt the woods the first couple of days of gun season, then maybe give it a rest, then hit the fields late in the season. I've seen it many times, at least here in central Ohio. Our gun season runs for one week, and everybody and their brother are hitting the woods all week. It doesn't take long for the deer to be pressured out of the woods and they start hiding in spots where you wouldn't ever think a deer would hide. Every year on the Friday of gun season I can walk out into my field and just about guarantee you a nice buck will be laying out there. My buddy has a 10 acre field and I told him we should push his field on Thursday or Friday so we decided to go Friday. 2 minutes into driving his field an dandy 12 pt. 135 class deer jumped up in front of him, and he dropped it with the 2nd shot. My opinion, wait til the deer get pressured, then hit the fields.
