horst Posted October 25, 2005 Report Share Posted October 25, 2005 Well last night I shot the wrong buck Ive been feeling kinda crappy lately and am meeting with a surgeon early next week about doing a scope to see if Ive got ulcers or something going on, if its something that needs surgery to correct I was looking at being out of bowhunting till the late season anyway.I found that out yesterday. So last night i went to one of our ladder stands that sits on the end of a treeline.Theres corn on one side, picked beans on the other, and a big grassy bedding area thats a couple acres off the end.A tile runs water through the whole works most of the year so its a good set up. About 45 minutes before dark I heard what sounded like 2 bucks fighting in the brush behind me but couldnt see anything.Then they ran off the other way. Anyway, it was getting towards dark and there were combines running everywhere, and tractors hauling grain running back and forth through the fields.I wasnt feeling real good anyway so I decided to call it a night figuring no deer were gonna come out in the open with all that commotion going on. I I climb down, start walking down the edge of the bedding are towards the beanfield where my trucks parked when it dawns on me theres a buck standing in the ironweeds watching me I did all I could, I knelt down, knocked an arrow, and waited.Finally the buck turned, and started waling away slowly.I got a good look at his rack then and immediately started shaking, he was a real good 10 pointer.In the weeds there it only took him a few seconds to get outta sight so I sat and waited about 5 minutes, it gave me time to think clearly and him time to get away from me so I could sneak outta the area. Finally I stood up and headed for the beans again, but when I neared the fence I see the bucks still standing out there in the beans , and hes only about 50 yrds away from me. im 20 yrds from the beans yet so I sit back down and cant see him.I dont know why, but something possessed me to bleat at him with just my mouth.Everything hapened fast after that.He came straight in towards me, I could see part of a antler tip coming through the weeds and I drew my bow back.I could see part of the body and forced myself to ignore the rack and look for a open shooting lane through the iron weeds. At this point hes only 15 yrds away and I still cant shoot through the weeds its crazy thick stuff in the fenceline.Finaly he stops, I can see part of his shoulder through a hole and the end of one antler through another, only shot im gonna get so i take it.The arrow sounds like a melon exploding when it hits, and he takes off.From the time i bleated at him to this point in the story keep in mind only about 10- 15 secomnds has passed, it was fast and the adreniline was really pumping.Thats what makes the next part so funny. I stood up to watch the deer run off and see where he went.But as I stood something caught my eye.It was the big 10 pointer, still standing in the field, looking at me, but at this point hes only about 25 yrds from me I shot the wrong deer.The 10 pointer just gave me a passing glance and walked across the wide open beanfield right in front of me.He then crossed into a pasture, walked up on top of the hill, and stopped to give me one more look back before he walked outta sight What I shot turned out to be a good management buck anyway, an old grey faced 8 pointer that had a decent spread but not much of anything else going for him.Oh well, yesterday morning I didnt think Id get to shoot a buck this year with a bow, last night I got one, from the ground, and it was just as exciting as if it had been the big one.After about 2 secomnds of regret i decided i was totally happy with what i got.But that other one better be carefull, I got a late muzzleloader tag coming up Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
