Go hunting during shotgun season if i dont pick up my grades, says my dad, omg im so mad. Its like i try hard in school and still seem to get D's and F's, and thats not acceptable in my house, but i try, and thats the important thing, grades dont measure how smart you are, trust me im smart, i got into this Specialty school(program in the school that specializes in Engineering) its called the engineering program, you have to pass a 100 answer math test write a paper explaining why you want to be in this, well i did all of that and i was one out of 50 accepted, there were 578 people who applied. So im smart, i just dont know what to do, i try so hard but just seem to not be making the grades, and in these classes i dont see how that will help me when i get older, When i get older all i want to do is work and hunt. Hunting is my life. And with the 59 F i have in Engineering Biology, i doubt i will get that grade up in 5 weeks. frown.giffrown.gifmad.gif

Re: I can\'t............

Sorry to say I would have to agree with your DAD on this one..... Wether you feel you won't need these classes when you get older is a mute point because you most definately will... Believe me you will,,, it's gotten to the point that not even a High School Diploma is enough for a well paying job,, most employers today would like to see atleast 4 years of college as well......

As for your studies,,, it sounds like you are giving it your all,, maybe there's something there that's being missed by your teachers,, I would suggest talking to one of your guidence counslers and see what can be done to improve this,,, use them they are in place to help you.... wink.gifwink.gif

Good Luck and I hope things improve for you.... wink.gifsmile.gif

Hey bud, gotta agree with your dad, sounds as though he is one of the few parents who still make rules and stick to them! I have no doubt that you are smart, your acceptance proves that....however I would guess with your ability, you just need to knuckle down in class: Talk to your teachers and go the extra mile to try and get help: I have never known a teacher to fail someone who is honestly working hard and tries. Put in some extra time, see what you can do to get help and in 5 weeks, you'll be out there:

I gotta say congrats to your dad...you may not realize it now, but someday you will thank him: (By the way, I remember missing a father/son fishing outing to Canada in 1988....Earned a D on my report card....dad missed the trip that year to: It was a learning experience and in the 17 years since I haven't missed a trip.) Thanks to my dad for teaching me a lesson that I never forgot!

Re: I can\'t............

I'm also agreeing with your Dad on this.

You can bring up a 59F to a passing grade in 5 weeks, because you are smart.

You may have to stay off the computer awhile, but it will be worth it.

Ok Young Man.....you are restricted to 1 hour computer time per day for the next five weeks.

"Now go get started on your homework...now....NOW I SAID".

Re: I can\'t............

Take it from an "almost" 29 year old Security Guard and Air Force Veteran, your high school diploma will get you nowhere in life. Now, I am stuck working 40 hours a week for almost 7 bucks an hour, while I take full time college classes at the same time. The best thing about the whole deal is I work for the college so I get free tuition. The downside is I get treated like an idiot security guard even though I am carrying a 3.0 GPA, I get treated like crap by students, parents, faculty, and staff. I spend more waking hours at the college than I do at home. In order to make my college schedule easier to handle I volunteered for a work shift that requires me to be at the college Sat. and Sun. for back to back 12 hour shifts, which gives me 3 days off during the week, Mon, Wed, and Fri., but, I go to class on those days which means I have no idea when I am gonna be back in the woods.

Finish school first, then get a job that allows you to hunt on weekends and has good vacation time. Hey, I would love to spend all my time hunting right now also, but, that's where priorities come in, and as long as you are living under your dad's roof, you are his priority. If keeping you outta the woods means you get into a better college, so be it. Take the good with the bad, get school done and over with, then hunt. Or, you could always be like me and wait until you have other responsibilities in life that just make it harder to hunt, fish, go to school, and deal with everything else an adult deals with.

Re: I can\'t............

you need to focus on your school right now and nothing else to bump those grades up.maybe you can get your teachers to find you a tutor .it might not hurt to do some extra work around the house to show dad you are responsable.good luck and let us know what happens

Re: I can\'t............

Your dad is wrong wrong wrong! How dare he love his kid enough to make rules! laugh.gif

He is actually right.

I didn't think geometry would help me much in life either and now I can't put up crown molding or make furniture like I would like because the angles and such don't make sense to me.

How about this.....explain to your dad that it is hard to bring up your overall average in time for the season. Make a deal with him that all you can do is improve your upcoming grades but that might not make your average be where he wants it for a while. Bring up grades going forward and you get to hunt.

Now, as for how to bring them up just study. Get extra help from your parents--having them study with you and seeing that you are trying may also help get you into the woods faster.

I used that 'my best' excuse growing up as a crutch, to be honest. I didn't do my best because I was smart and could make good grades but when C's came out, I had done my best.

I found that when doing homework, I was doing it to get through it and not to learn it. When I figured that out and changed my study habits, things got better.

Ask for help, ask for extra homework, ask for tutoring, but you said it yourself "I am smart". Smart people figure out how to make things happen.

As for your comment about just wanting to work and hunt.....oh boy, I made that same mistake once. If I could go back to where dear old dad was paying my way and all I had to do was go to school, make good grades, and stay out of trouble.....IN A HEARTBEAT PAL. Working brings its own set of problems and stresses and it is a LOT harder than it sounds.

Good luck,

New

Re: I can\'t............

You can pick that grade up to passing in five weeks.Ask the teacher if you can do any extra credit to pick the grade up a few points.I feel your pain, cause I had a tough time time getting passing grades in high school too. Can't say I blame your dad, cause you need that diploma.I had the same thing happen when I was a sophomore, and missed the first weekend of shotgun season and it was a bummer. You can do it bud, just keep your nose to the grindstone for a few weeks,it will be worth it.

Re: I can\'t............

I hate to add to everyone's comments but they are all right. As someone who has been out of college for only a few years (5) I understand your frustrations. I had to limit my hunting those 4 years I was at school and focus on the future. Just remember it will all pay off. I now have a great job that allows me to buy all of the 'hunting toys' I want and I have all of the vacation time I could ever need for hunting. So a few years of limited hunting is well worth the 50+ years after that.

Re: I can\'t............

I had a few seasons taken away from me by my father. After the seasons done, its always the best one the boys have had, the most deer shot and atleast one deer shot on MY stand. You hear the stories, and see the pictures.

It just isn't worth it, do whatever you have to do. I know it seems hard, but go in after school and get some one-to-one help with anyone you can.

I know I know, who wants to spend their day at school and then stay after for some STUPID school work. I never did, and I missed tons of opportunities for good memories.

It ain't worth it boy, go in and get the job done, have a heck of a season in reward.
