Guest Xen Posted November 3, 2005 Report Share Posted November 3, 2005 i currently own a knight mk-85 in .54 cal. the biggest problem i have with it, is that no matter what i try, it won't shoot sabots. the answer i got that made the most sense, was that the older barrels didn't have enough twist to shoot them. also, i have a hard time finding .54 caliber bullets, see plenty of .45 and .50 all over. any advice? i think i'd like a .50 based on the fact that i can get more readily available components in my area. seems like an odd thing to base my choice on tho any benefit of sticking with a .54 over a .50? any benefit of a .45 over a .50? I bought my .30-06 because even if I lose or forget my box of shells I can walk into any store and most of them will have a box of .30-06. The .50 caliber is the most popular right now and has the largest variety of bullets available. It is very versitile and can effectively take anything that walks on this planet when fed the proper bullet type/style. I am on my 8th 50 caliber ML. They are definately fun and versitile guns. The .45 caliber will work fine on deer and can offer recoil relief as most of the bullets are lighter. They can be very impressive with the correct components. I just bought my first .45 caliber ML gun yesterday so I have no personal experience with them. Talking with people of whose opinion I respect, speak highly of it though. I can't wait to test it out. The .54 caliber will definately do the job on just about anything you want to shoot. It is not the flattest shooting gun, but has a large frontal diameter and can on modest distances of out to 125 yards or so, it will hang with any gun. Since it shoots heavier bullets and charges, it will have more recoil than the smaller calibers. If you want to keep your .54 and find something that may work, I suggest contacting Cecil at Precision Rifle I would bet he has a combination that will be more than adequate for your gun.
