how do you stay warm

I have been freezin' my butt off for years. In that time I would say I learned there are ways to stay warmer.

Learned the hard way...

One is muliple lays of fleece and wool with at least one layer of wind blocking material. Try to stay away from 100% cotton clothing.

Two hats is another way.

DO NOT over layer if you have to walk a long ways. Pack in the outer 1 or 2 layers and put them on once you "cool" down a bit.

DO NOT over layer your socks. You must keep an air space in there to collect warmth. If you pack your feet into 4 or 5 pairs of socks and then stuff them in your boots, your all done in about an hour.

It goes without saying to use insulated boots in real cold weather.

I buy my boots a size larger just for the extra room. (Tip for stand hunters, not long walkers)

Of coarse a heated box stand is the best way when the winds are whipping and its -30*F.. LOL

I have 2 box stands and they are great when its just too nippy or rainy.

Plus they are great to teach or bring begining hunters. Its no fun for a kid if its more a fight for survival then a comfy hunting experience.

Plus they can move, fidget, snack, play GameBoy's, etc, and not ruin the hunt.

I wear a product called underarmour. I started wearing it for football, and let me tell you, this stuff is absolutely amazing. When you sweat, it wicks sweat from your body, and keeps it on the outside of the fabric. This prettywell eliminates overdressing, so you can wear as much clothes as you can, and not worry about sweating too much.

Basically what everyoon else said..I might add pocket handwarmers for your gloves and inside of boots on top of your foot. There really nothing that is foolproof...-30 below is still -30 below and you still have your face out there.

On cold days, when I get home, my wife will get our whirlpool tub filling as soon as I get home and once I'm out of my clothes, I soak for a bit. Then go down and get in front of our fireplace or woodstove!! grin.gif

Re: how do you stay warm

I agreewith what everyone else said. In my experience the first, and most important step to staying warm is to stay dry. do what you can to stop yourself from sweating on the way to your stand, dress light, go slow, whatever works for you. I have found myself freezing cold in temps in the mid 40's after working up a sweat on the way to my stand.

Re: how do you stay warm

Invest in some Grabber hand and foot warmers. It will be the best investment you ever did when it comes to staying warm. Depends on the type but most last 7 to 12 hours!!

I found some boot inserts at Wal-Mart that accept handwarmers that fit in the toe section of the insole. Keeps my toes nice and warm. As for my hands I got a nice muff that I stick a handwarmer in and this keeps my hands very warm. If you can keep your hands and feet warm, your winning the battle. Once one or both get cold your in trouble!!

Small investment to make to stay warm. Grabbers range from 78 cents to $1.00 around here. My pack is filled with them. Awesome invention!!
