VermontHunter
Let's see how this one turns out... Here's the story.. I have worked in a large Supermarket for 17+ years as a manager, I have 3 young teenagers that work part time for me (nights & weekends) and when it comes to the hunting season I usually have priority when it comes to time off for hunting..... But this last Thurs. 2 of the 3 asked if they could talk to me,,, of course I said sure. We go into my office and close the door, I ask whats up ?? They said we know that you usually get hunting off but we would like to hunt together this weekend if it's possible... I could see that they were expecting the worse from this,, but I had already heard they were going to ask.... .. I do the usual wait and wait some more without saying anything as they gander at each other....lol,,, then I say well you know, I really appreciate you asking and not calling in on me and leaving me short handed, so YEAH go ahead and take the weekend and have a BLAST and I'll cover... ..... You should have seen the look of SHOCK on there faces, it was precious.... This where the priority part comes in remember I said I had 3 teenagers working under me...YIKES,, yup you guessed it here he comes 15 min. later after hearing I had given the other 2 the weekend off,, needless to say he would have had the same result if he would have acted like a young man like the other 2, but NO this one starts to go off on me right then and there in front of other employee's asking me how I dare give the other 2 the weekend when he works just as hard.... Needless to say this isn't going to be pretty by all means... ,, I have him go in my office where I start the lecture part,, he then pulls I'll quit thing..... BAD MOVE,, now Im already heated by the way he went about his tantrum, and asked him to punch out, he then asks what Im fired ?? I look at him and asked what did you expect, of course you are..... Needless to say this absolutely ruined my day big time..... But on a good note, I just a call from one of the 2 young men that I gave the weekend too,, He nailed a nice 9pt. this afternoon and wanted to thank me for lettiing him hunt the first weekend... What more could you ask for ?? after I congratulated him, he voluntered to work on Sunday to make up some work, that the other one I had to fire should have done.... To me that right there is respect... I didn't get to hunt, but still my weekend seems complete.... I'm still pulling for the second young man..... Hopefully tomarrow !!.. Thanks for listening, I just had to express that there are still some very hard working teenagers out there,, they aren't all spoiled to the point that they are know it all's and derespectful.... Nut
Re: Work, Hunting and Priorities Good call and tough call. Maybe someday the one will realize the proper way to state his cause. It took me a few years after I got fired when I was 18.

[/ QUOTE ] Usually as a rule it's a give me that I get this time off,, without any trouble or fighting, but I felt these young men deserved the time since I took the first week of bowseason off for my Vacation,,,, Just too bad the other young man had to make a spectacal of himself... If he shows up on Monday,, to see me and has a better outlook I'll take him back, he is a good worker, he just went a bit far that's all... and maybe I did also, but I felt I had to make the dicission I did with 2 other managers watching the whole deal go down..... NS whitetail
Re: Work, Hunting and Priorities that's cool that you gave those 2 the time off ------ and ya had to do what ya had to do with the third, so don't worry about it
Tominator
Re: Work, Hunting and Priorities Interesting Luke. Happy for the 2, they handled it the right way. As far as the other dude, well, I work with teenagers all the time. I hope he comes to his senses. I'm one to forgive and forget, hopefully he'll at least apologize. VtBowhunter
Re: Work, Hunting and Priorities Luke, from what you described, it sounds like the 3rd kid was lookin to get fired. I've seen that attitude several times myself in the past, and every time they were lookin' to get the axe. I've had to fire my share of adults in the past, too, so it's not exclusively teens. VermontHunter
Re: Work, Hunting and Priorities Josh, I too have had to fire my share of adults, but it just seems to be harder to take when it's a young teenager for some reason... This is one part of my job I really dislike, BIGTIME...

007hunter
Re: Work, Hunting and Priorities I also work in a large supermarket part time back in produce, although I'm not a manager. My boss is really good about giving time off for hunting. He's a hard core archery hunter and understands. But the way he does it if you need time off, is he has one of them big desk calendars which he leaves on his desk and if you want off or need off work by a certain time you write it down atleast a week ahead of time and 99% of the time he'll give you what you need. I've had off every Saturday for the last month so I could go hunting and also he worked with me so that I could get out in the mornings during the week. I think it is such a blessing to have a boss who works with your schedule.
