ladydiehard Posted November 14, 2005 Report Share Posted November 14, 2005 I'm curious to know how many of you view hunting, deer hunting in particular, as a "family" tradition. My dad, who is 73 years old, will be driving from AR to WI to join us for the regular gun season which opens this Saturday. His health isn't perfect but the doc says he can hunt so long as he takes it easy and doesn't drag a deer! I cherish each and every hunt with my dad because one just never knows when it might be the last. I have two uncles that also hunted with us. One is gone now but I felt privileged to actually watch him shoot his last deer. The other still tries to hunt a little but arthritis is causing him alot of trouble. Hunting has been a tradition in my family ever since I can remember. I cherish the years of memories. Theres much more to this traditon than just bagging a deer year after year, although thats certainly part of it. The tradition includes family and friends spending time together, having fun, helping each other, sitting around the cabin telling deer stories, old and new, pigging out, telling jokes, and making new memories together. So far, out of 4 kids, only 1 has shown some mild interest in hunting. I'm a bit of a social outcast when it comes to hunting. My Dad and brothers and I don't get to hunt together as much as we use to but every Thanksgiving morning we all get together and go deer hunting. It's great. Not only will we have a Thanksgiving dinner but we will also have a harvest dinner which is usually bigger than our turkey dinner. A whole week of family fun and deer hunting, it's a hoot! I have been around hunting my whole life,and been hunting basically with the same friends and family for about 15 years now.My dad started deer hunting when I was about 10,and I was drawn to it right from the start.Between him and my grandpa I got to spend plenty of time in the woods and at deer camp.For me it is definately about memories and being with family and friends.My dad passed away in 1999 when he was 40,and most of my greatest memories of him are from being up at the farm.My grandpa is still going strong at the age of 78.He wouldn't miss shotgun season for anything.I'm pretty fortunate that I had people to teach me about hunting,and that I get to hunt with cousins,grandpa,and some of the nicest guys I've ever met.Our shotgun season starts Friday,and I can't wait to see the guys and throw back a few cold ones and play a few hands of poker while we sit around and shoot the bull. My dad and all my uncles hunt, well, except for one (he married into the family), but he at least tried it a few times. Both my grandfathers hunted, one which I still hunt with, the other died before I was born. It's a shame, too, because everyone tells me I'm just like him. He would load up the truck with his sons (four of them) and all the neighborhood kids and take them hunting, whoever wanted to go and didn't have a daddy to take them. The land my buddy hunts on is leased by guys that my grandfather used to take hunting when they were kids. That's how my buddy got started hunting. It's a shame, though, because my brother and most of my cousins don't hunt. Some of them have before, but don't REALLY hunt. I know for a fact I'm taking my kids hunting. I only rember one time as a kid that he left to go rabbit hunting. I was too young to go, but I remember being excited when he got home with them. I have never hunted with my dad, I'm gonna do something about that. I did go hunting with my brother this weekend. Took him on his first deer hunt. I think he likes it.... One thing's for sure, I should have tried earlier to get him to go. I'm sure I'll not forget the good time we had. I have hunted quite a bit with my brother in law and some with my father in law. Tradition, Dad doesn't hunt much anymore and grandpa is gone but Dad told me when I was 18 the best thing he ever did was get me into hunting and motorcycles cause it kept me away from drugs. They all like the idea but never make the time for it. My mothers side hunted but not realy seriously. My wife recognizes hunting as appropriate game management and providing food but wouldn't want to do it herself. The whole death thing turns her off...guess I can't blame her. Some of my dad's brothers used to hunt pheasants and he would go with them once in a while but he could take it or leave it. We moved far away from the rest of the family when I was 10. He took me rabbit hunting a few times when I started showing interest in hunting to make sure I was safe, and he went deer hunting a few times with me when I didn't have anyone else to go with for safety reasons only. Me... well I like pheasant, turkey, and coyote hunting the most. Deer hunting I can take or leave. I do it once in a while, but dont miss it if I don't go especially with how crazy gun deer season is here in Wisconsin. THey just were not deer hunters since the deer population was extremelysmall where they lived. MyDad only hunted squirrels and rabbits.HIs brother was more into hunting and also went after furbearers. THeir Dad(my Granpa) was a dog man. He had rabbit dogs,squirrels dogs and coon dogs. Not one of them ever spent 1 hour hunting deer or turkeys though. My brother tried hunting deer but spends all his time working. My mothers side has both. HUnters and non-hunters. Everyone of them loves venison as far as I know. Now my wife and 3 sons are all deer and turkey hunters. So hopefully it will be a family tradition from now on.
