VermontHunter
Time for me to rant.... This makes 3 weeks in a row that I've had a deputy sherrif nock on my door late at night and serve me with a subpena to show up in family court and give live testimony, when I've already given a detailed statement...... All three of these subpenas, are for juveniles that have repetavely stolen from the supermarket where I work..... What a video tape with the actual crime on it and a witnessed statement isn't good enough for the courts any more they have to drag me out of work at 8:30 in the morning to deal with this crap, like I haven't better things to do at work..... Thanks for listening to me rant and rave, but man this is out of control.....

[/ QUOTE ] I think that's what my written statement is supposed to do... and besides I'm not the only one in that store that has to write statements out everytime some decides they might be able to get away with stealing something...... Now if this was to go and testifiy against someone that was stealing deer stands or poaching or something hunting related Id be there with bells on.... Thanks for listening to me rant and rave, but man this is out of control..... [/ QUOTE ] There is a reason with why it is that way. It's not the deputies fault, it is because of the laws your legislators have created and the formalities of the District Attorney's office have to make charges stick. Remember, these scumbags lawyers read every word and pick through it with a fine toothed comb to get them off on a technicality. (Which of course the Sheriffs Dept would then be blamed for the lousy police work (yep, people would blame them), even though that was not the case. After 17 years in law enforcement, I guess I get used to people not understanding the system as it can be confusing. Just try and understand that there is more to it than just incompetence. Call the District Attorneys office, find out who the prosecutor is and explain to him your concerns. If he has time and is a decent guy, he will explain to you in greater detail why this formality needs to be done. Hope this helps.
VermontHunter
Re: That\'s It Now I\'m TICKED OFF !! I hear ya Ken and understand the formalities of this process..... It just irratates me that the courts need for me to be there when they have the statements of the events that took place.... I will be there like I was for the other two times,, it just burns up a whole day of work that I could be doing for a lousy 15 mins. of testimony that I have already put in my statement... I know it's not the officers and D.A.'s fault,, it's the system in whole.. The law breakers get every oppurtunity to get off on these charges,, and it's even worse when it's a juvenile, even if they are repeat offenders.... I will be calling the prosicuter handling this case and make sure we are on the same page as far as the accounts of this incident,,,, this case is over 6 months old and I can't remember everything word for word concerning what I wrote for a statement,, but I will before the case date comes to hand..... It's just a time burning process in my opinion but I will go the the necessary steps in assurring that this individule gets what he deserves accordding to the law..... Thanks for the reply Ken,,, it just gives us a little sample of how frustrating your job is as a law enforcement officers trying to protect us hard working people is.... I for one thank you for what you do for us as citizens....

deerslayer2295
Re: That\'s It Now I\'m TICKED OFF !! actually vermonthunter, if you think about it, you are still doing work for the store. you are presenting testimony against the defendants which in turn is being used to protect the owners property. as I see it, you are still doing the work you were hired to do. hopefully your little thieves are receiving some kind of punishment, and not allowed back on the store property. [/ QUOTE ] I wasn't hired as a security officer,, I was hired to run and manage a dept. within the store... But I do understand what you are saying tho..... I see it as these individules, stealing money from my wallet in the form of my future raises, and or even my future employment with this company.. So I will track down and apprehend these thieves every chance I get.... Don't get me wrong I don't mind giving testimony when need be, but man this is three time in less than a month..... Hoosierbuck
Re: That\'s It Now I\'m TICKED OFF !! The reason you have to go is the Constitutional right to confrontation. You have the right to hear, see, and queston the witnesses testifying against you. That is important. Everyone thinks the bad guys have too many rights until it's you that is accused of a crime, or your little brother is accused of date rape, or your spouse is accused of having their hand in the till at work. Then you are going to be **** glad those rights are there. This is coming from a D.A. who has to climb the mountain created by these bad guys' rights every day. I'll accept that, because if the guilty little rats don't have those rights, then neither do I. HB
VermontHunter
Re: That\'s It Now I\'m TICKED OFF !! You know I wouldn't mind that uphill battle if the laws wouldn't protect minors to the point it's wasting my time to hear that the law won't dish out severe penalties to minors becuase they can't be held responsible for their actions..... I have already watched 2 of these minors walk out of the court room laughing, with nothing more than a stern lecture from the judge..... knowing that they can't or wont be touched by the law because they are minors,, we as a society need to get over this sympothy route for minors that are repeat offenders, and start putting the hammer down on them.... I'll do my duty and show up to this court date, in hopes this one gets whats coming to him.....but I won't hold my breath

The next time you catch one of those little punks stealing in your store, Cut one of their hands off, lol, we deal with that crap in our store also, they have a habit of stealing the most expensive cut of meat and going to the bar down the street to sell it for a couple of dollars worth of drugs.. Hoosierbuck
Re: That\'s It Now I\'m TICKED OFF !! VH-the bright side is if they don't turn from their life of crime while they are young, and end up facing a judge for sentencing as an adult, you ought to see the looks on their faces when that old juvie stuff shows up on a pre-sentence investigation and bites them on the butt! VermontHunter
Re: That\'s It Now I\'m TICKED OFF !! Well, I talked to the D.A. handling this case yesterday, and he explained why he wants me there in person.... Apparently this young man is a mulitiple repeat offender and he definately doesn't want to see him get off this time... and my presence just makes the odds of that much better... He also told me he has a little suprise for this individule and his parents, when they loose, seems Vermont has something in place called the Work Replacement Program, where this individule would have to work no less than 60 hours for the store,(ME), without recieving any sort of payment,, if found guilty... I really hope this one looses his case I would love the oppertunity to show him just what it's like to work hard for what little we get,, just to end up with nothing becuase someone like him walks out the door with the merchandise without paying for it on a dailey basis........ We'll just have to wait and see what happens,, but Im glad I call the D.A.'s office and had a chat with him in anycase, he seems just as frustrated about this juvenile stuff as I am.... We make the little hooligans wash our patrol cars, pick up trash and cut the grass around the Provost Marshalls Office if they get caught shoplifting on the installation. I'm quite sure that in a big store like yours there's pleanty of 'make pretty' stuff that needs to be done and no one on the payroll really wants to do. Make it painful.
