Re: Welping box for future beagle pups.

Well, if she just "conceived" last week.....you've got a while yet. Most momma dogs won't start showing til

somewhere in the 4th or 5th week. ( It takes about 62-63 days) I've always brought my beagles inside to give birth. And always just put in a couple of towels while the birthing is going on. Then after the pups are born, I clean everything up and replace the towels with a blanket.

You could use chips or straw but that gets pretty messy. Especially once the pups start crawling around and momma has gotten tired of cleaning up after them all the time.

I never made a whelping box. Only because I didn't know how and didn't have the stuff to make one with. So I just used a large clothes basket. It kept the puppies close to their mother.

LOL-----I learned my lesson with the very first litter of beagles I had. I thought it would be okay to let Isabel have her pups outside in her kennel. HOWEVER..................this was her first litter and she was totally clueless as to what to do. So she thought she should dig a hole and BURY HER PUPPIES!!! crazy.gifcrazy.gif LOL Good thing I was there to stop her and take them inside. smirk.gif

Good luck!! Take some pics for us!!!!

For a whelping box something 4'x4' is good.At about 6" from the bottom turn a 2x4 sideways so that the pups can get away from her and not get sat on.DO NOT use straw or chips.Use towels or newspapers. The pups can choke on anything small like that.Have the door raised about 6" to keep the pups in.
