We got about 1/2" of snow yesterday, just enough that a critter would leave a track if it was to walk around. I loaded up the shotgun and took off trying to track a pheasant. After about 1/2 an hour and jumping 3 rabbits (there time is coming ) I cut a pheasant track. There wasn't quite enough snow to leave a great track, so it took some doing to follow it, but after 6 or 7 steps a hen pheasant exploded at my feet. Amazing the adrenaline rush a lil' ol' bird can give me. After she flew off, I figured there had to be a boy bird hanging around so I poked around the switch grass a little more, and cut another track. I followed it right out to a game trail where I could see the tracks lengthening and I figured it had to be a c-ock bird because that's their typical M.O.--hear a hunter, run like heck. Well, after about 30 yards of tracking him, I lost the track and he gave me the slip. So, first semi-serious attempt at a pheasant, pheasant 1, me 0. Mostly because I use such a different load on the bunnies. I've found that a magnum load of #6, even in 20 gauge, tears up too much meat, but a light load of 7 1/2's are too small to effectively down a wild ringneck.
