If you're just getting started I'd advise a release aid. You will become more consistent and more accurate sooner by starting off with a release aid. This is in no way saying finger shooting is not accurate or consistent but the learning curve is greater. Get youself a quality release aid like a Scott, Cobra, Tru-Fire, or Tru-ball and have someone at a local archery store tie you a loop on your string and use your release to clamp on to the loop. You'll probably, most certainly, be more accurate with a mechanical release of some sort as opposed to releasing with your fingers. There are many reasons for this, namely the short axle to axle measurements of today's bows. I'd highly suggest you go with a mechanical release. If you like the idea of "letting go" of the string, as opposed to pulling the trigger (like me), there are a few releases like that and they are typically called "relax" triggers. The WinnFree C12 is one that comes to mind, and the TruFire XCaliper is another. I have both those releases, and both are nice. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There are so many different types of releases out there, it will just blow your mind. What I would recommend on you doing is to go to a pro shop and try them out. Honestly I think as long as you stick with one you'll develop either one to become accurate with both, but I do think releases are a little more consistent when moving from the target range to the cold trees.
