My IL 9 pointer and puppy

I got a chance to hunt our second shotgun season at the Crab Orchard Refuge. Let me tell you that is some rough terrain compared to the farm ground I hunt. It was a blast, this was the 16th deer I saw on Thursday and had to take him. I'd been seeing some does move in and out of a huge thicket for a while when a hot one came through. Shortly after a small half rack came through on her trail. He hooked around and stood about 50 yards right in my shooting lane. As I was watching him I heard blah, blahhh, blahhh, coming through the thicket. I turned and here this one came. He was gonna whip that little fart for chasing his doe. He flashed into my lane as I grunted with my mouth to stop him. All in about 1 second I decide he was pretty tall and worth shooting. Bam!!! Donkey kick and over the ridge he went. I was pretty sure I nailed him. So I sat there took a deep breath and reached for my radio. Before I could get it I heard "Nice shot I saw him go down, now we've got our work cut out for us" I said "Yes!, alright I'm getting down" and started to climb down. My buddy was only about 150 yards away from me. The little half rack came back and stood right where I shot this one and watched me climb down. I think I saved his butt. This all happened about 2:30pm. I walked up to where he was and I followed the blood trail with my eyes all the way about 80 yards to where he lay. It looked like someone spray painted a 3 foot wide red stripe to him. Hes not as wide as I thought he was going to be but he's got some good height on him. Upon field dressing him I found his heart was exploded and his lungs were liquified. This is the first deer I shot with the new Brenneke KOs I started using. They're pretty sweet. It was a long drag too. About 1.5 miles up and down hills. We made it to the truck about dark. It was a blast I'd definitely do it again.

Thats my new yellow lab Libby.

Re: My IL 9 pointer and puppy

Not trying to hijack the thread here, but, I was thinking about an earlier thread about outside the ears antler restrictions. Now, with this deer in mind, under those types of restrictions, it would be real hard to determine in the time it takes to decide sometimes. If you notice in the first pic, those antlers just barely go past the ears. I guess it would depend on which angle the ears are at. This just proves though the ear-antler restriction would be a bad choice.
