Re: Animal Track Art

I have a story for you.

About 26 years ago, I went hunting up in the mountains when I lived over on the mainland for blacktails. I was driving a 1968 Valiant then, and it wasn't exactly the ideal vehicle for logging roads, but that never stopped me from venturing high into the mountains.

While trying to drive up into the mountains (about halfway to the top), I encountered snow...big flakes and lots of them. I figured I'd better get turned around fast and get down out of there before I got stuck, because the higher I went the deeper the snow got, and coming down hard.

I was just about to turn around, when I spotted a really fresh, large deer track crossing the road and heading down an old skid-road. I turned the car around and parked it. I started following the track, that must have been only minutes old, because of the heavy snow-fall happening. I followed it for about 100 yards and stopped dead in my tracks when a very large, very fresh cougar track, came down off the bank and was also following the same deer I was.

You could see the swish marks from the cougar's tail in the snow.

I don't mind saying that the hair on the back of my neck stood up, just thinking that the cougar was probably just around the next corner, in pursuit of the same deer I was.

I was content to back off, and let him do his thing. grin.gif

The snow was getting too deep anyway, and I had to get the heck out of there, for two good reasons now. grin.gifsmile.gif

Kind of an eerie feeling knowing you are that close to a large cat, but you can't see it yet. I was a lot younger then too, and didn't really want to see it anyway (out of plain ol' fear shocked.gif) ...LOL

Re: Animal Track Art

Wolf, moose, caribou, eagle and bear tracks on a sand bar in Birch Creek, (A tributary of the Yukon N.E. of Fairbanks,Alaska.) We put our tent on a bear track once that was just huge, then slept snuggled up to a .338 and .44mag. My buddy shot a wolf on the bank of the river that week, and we missed out a moose that was too quick for us.

Once in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, California, we saw a huge herd of muleys right by camp, then that night we were out in a meadow laying down looking at the stars, and heard noises. Packed it in, then reconned the area next day and found fresh mountain lion tracks where we had laid in the dust looking at the stars. Subsequently there have been several attacks in that park, some fatal, I think.

PM me if you want more stories, I'm full of it.

Re: Animal Track Art

A few years back, I took an 85 mile canoe trip along with two friends down the Rio Grande. We launched at Lajitas, just below Big Bend National Park and headed downstream. On the fourth day, we camped on a sand bar late in the evening and did a little fishing. We caught several nice catfish and left them staked out on a stringer to clean the next morning. We got up about 7:00, fixed breakfast then walked the 20 yards down to the river to get our fish. About 10 yards from where we'd been sleeping, without a tent of course, there was a fresh set of mountain lion tracks leading straight to our fish! Needless to say, the stringer and all of the fish were gone. None of us even woke up!!!
