Re: Different Types of whitetails??

There are over 30 subspecies of the whitetail. The biggest being dacotensis I believe (the monster Saskatchecatspellit kind), the smallest being the endangered key deer down in the everglades.

Here's a lousy map I found:

There's a better PDF map on the net if you Google "whitetail subspecies distribution"

Re: Different Types of whitetails??

No problem guys. I take some heat from my buddy ohiobucks with this taxonomy stuff, but I guess I just find it interesting.

Now when you see somebody post "we don't get deer that big down here" you'll know why.

There's a property in nature (don't remember the name of it, starts with a B), that says, the farther north you go, the bigger the body of a particular species. It has to do with core body heat. That's why the Canada version of the whitetail is the biggest, and the smallest is the key deer. I won't complain too much, Ohio is in the Odocoileus virginianus borealis territory, which is the second biggest subspecies of the whitetail.

I think the property in nature you are talking about is Bergman's Rule or Bergman's Law or something like that. Saskbucks knows what the proper term is. I just know that our deer in Saskatchewan can get large bodies. There's even a noticeable difference in average body size of deer from northern Saskatchewan versus southern Saskatchewan.

Yep, I think that's it. wink.gif

Re: Different Types of whitetails??

Yup, they nailed it. The colder the climate the bigger the deer in the area. Big deer have a lower surface area to volume ratio meaning it loses less heat. Similarly in the hot south a big deer would overheat, while the small deer that evolved there have a higher surface area to volume ratio meaning they can cool much more easily. Much the same thing that occurs with shiras moose in the south being much smaller bodied than Alaska Yukon moose in the north.

Interesting....

This might also explain the differences in the size of people in Florida to the size of people in Canada.....

J / K guys....

Actually, you're not too far from the truth. Take a typical Eastern European, or Eskimo, and compare him/her to someone from Africa. I don't want to sound racist, but there's a reason why native Europeans are shorter than native Africans.

Wow! There's a lot of species of whitetails along the coast of South and North Carolina.

[/ QUOTE ]

Mostly due to those deer being seperated by the Intercoastal Waterway.

Georgia got a mess of Borealis deer back in the 60's or 70's I think, when they swapped with Wisconsin for turkey.

Re: Different Types of whitetails??

my buddy told me that the wildlife department in ocala florida brought down some bigger deer from PA to make stronger deer in ocala and thats why they are bigger there, That explains the reason why they are bigger up there compared to farther south. thanks again for the info tominator

Re: Different Types of whitetails??

Hey, is a 250 pound deer harder to kill than a 150 pound deer with a bow, would you not get the penatration? i kill deer in maryland that avaerage 130 to 170 pounds live weight and always wondered if a real big deer came along would it be tougher to kill him, or would the arrow have the same affect on him as the other deer i have gotten. I know it depends on shot placementbut lets say single lung shot because he is bigger and maybe my arrow would not go through him? do you know what I mean
