TOMSD5 Posted December 26, 2005 Report Share Posted December 26, 2005 went out last evening deer hunting...got in the stad around 2:30 p.m. and settled in for the evening.... it was mostly calm and the little breeze that was there was from the southwest. South west wind is the best for my huntting situation.... well i saw nothing until around 4:50 when like a goast slipping thru the woods at 40 yards i notice a deer...it was the buck i had been after for a while now(the same one i hit with a mzloader last season and the one i hit with a broadhead this bow season)....i put he crosshairs of my 243 on the shoulder but a tree covered the vital area so i pull on into the neck shoulder area and bammmmmmmmm...down he went like a ton of bricks fell on him... i watched from my perch and saw him kick a few times then settle down....well i sat there for 15 minutes and decieded to go and check him out ....ALRIGHT!!!!....well i get 5 or six steps from the stand and still see white belly ...then all of a sudden the buck jumps up and takes off like a rocket.....ok by now it's raining so i get my landlord to help me find the deer ...we looked for an hour last evening and most all of today and not a single sight of any sign from him...other than the big puddle of blood where he laid for 15 minutes.... i guess this deer has a big angle watching over him cause i didn't get him again...next time i'll speak to the deer to get permission as the indians did ...has this ever happened to any of you before... That's really disappointing. And the dang rain sure doesn't help, does it. I guess from now on you'll give them a good 1/2 hr before approaching them, just to make sure. I always do now, because I've jumped wounded deer out of their death beds in the past, from not waiting long enough and I have heard these stories before all to often. Real sorry Tom. TOMSD5 Posted December 26, 2005 Author Report Share Posted December 26, 2005 Re: got my buck ...i thought well i had the chance to pop him again but just never did...i guess next time i'll put a second as a just in case in him.....went out back and looked for 3 more hours and still nothing ...so i thought maybe i need to shot my 243 to see where it's striking at....it was shooting 4 1/2 in. high and 2 in. to the rightat 50 yards so i figure i hit the buck high in the top of the back(grazing him enough to stun him )...i reset my scope and am dead on now...maybe i'll have another crack at him before the season is over which we still havew 2 weeks of gun hunting left....i don't know how the scope got off so much but it's set now....i feel as if the buck is alive but sore again..... It was our muzzleloader season and I was walking along the top of a ridge when I spotted him walking down off. I steadied myself against a tree and fired. The buck dropped and stayed there, until I started walking to him. He jumped up and took off down the ridge straight across a lower "bench" and back up in the direction he came from, and there was not 1 drop of blood or a piece of hair anywhere. This was in snow so following him was easy. Come to find out, I hit a small tree in front of him, which forced the tree into the buck, and knocked him over. I guess he was just laying there trying to figure out what happened when he heard me walking up on him and then he got up and took off. It reminds me of an episode I encountered one bow season years ago. I shot at a buck and watched as the rear end of my arrow flipped from an obvious deflection off some unseen branch. I did see the arrow ricochet off at a real bad angle. The deer ran away and I sat on stand for another half hour. When I went out to pick up my arrow, I noticed blood and fat along the entire length of the shaft. I stood there in dis-belief because I was certain that I had watched a complete miss. That was when I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye, and there 15 yards away was the bucks head slowly bobbing up and then back down again. Now, if you want to see a comical chinese fire drill that was the place to watch it. I was in a complete, out of control, panic and my hurried attempt at a rather easy 15 yard shot missed badly. Unbelievably, the deer got to its feet and ran across the goldenrod field like a drunken sailor. It was flopping from side to side and occasionally rearing way up just to maintain its balance and over the rise, 50 yards away, he went . I went over to where he was laying and there was a big puddle of blood with a few big clots in it. Now, remember, a half hour had elapsed since I shot. I tracked that deer for another 150 yards before I found it. By the way the last 50 yards or better was without any blood at all. As it turned out, the arrow had indeed deflected badly and instead of hitting behind the shoulder, it had ricocheted through the throat cutting the jugular. I always thought that that kind of hit would result in a real quick death, but apparently not. So depending on the quantity and color of the blood, your hit may have been a similar wound. In my case it took 1/2 hour of bleeding out and 150 yards of tracking to find him. With only 15 minutes of waiting, as was your case, I wonder just how far he might have actually gotten before going down. But, if he was hit in a similar fashion to mine, it is for certain that he did eventually go down. It might be worth one more good intensive body scan of the area.
