Adios nicotine!

Well, I think my prayers have been answered and I've beaten my nicotine addiction. Don't get me wrong--I know how common a relapse is with this, but have reason to be optimistic. I had my last smoke on Sunday, Jan 8th at 10:30 PM.

On Monday, I made it until 1:00 PM, lost my cool and chewed a piece of nicorette. It did the trick for me, but afterwards I felt that I didn't need any kind of nicotine.

Three days later...past initial withdrawal, cravings, moodiness-all nicotine out of my blood stream. Went through two days of exhaustion--falling asleep at 7:00 PM tired.

End of that week, feeling great. More awake. Ate pizza without adding seasoning--starting to tasted things again. Slight wheeze I've had for a while gone.

This past Monday--woke up in the AM coughing. I heard this is common when people quit, but it only lasted that morning.

This week at work has been terribly stressful. Though I still want to and still have been tempted to smoke, I have been able to resist the urge pretty easily.

I never though I could quit cold turkey. But the patch, which I'd tried several times never worked, the gum tasted like garbage, and there was no way I was going to take a psychoactive drug to quit smoking. I have been thinking about this...how many people do I know have tried to quit using some kind of replacement therapy? A lot. Most of them still smoke. Those I know that have quit successfully have done so cold turkey.

I've been thinking about how much time I've spent over the last thirteen years smoking. How much money I've wasted--and mostly, worying about what kind of damage I have done to my body.

For anyone that wants to quit and would like some advice on cold turkey quitting, please let me know. I'm not ALL the way there yet as far as getting rid of cravings goes, but have found some strategies that help me get through the day.

Re: Adios nicotine!

Congrats on your taking the first step! You can do it. It will be hard for a little while but its better in the long run. Just remember, you are over the hard part, it's all downhill from here.

This past Monday was my 1 year anniversary of being smoke free. It takes about 6 to 8 months to regain your sence of smell. But you will notice it getting better. I can now smell if someone is smoking in their vehicle and driving in front of me. Before, I could not smell my own smoke. Besides the health benefits, the extra money is sweet! Between the gas prices and cigarette prices, its outrageously expensive! Take the money you used to spend on smokes and put it in a jar. You can probably go on a guided hunt this fall with the money you saved.

Re: Adios nicotine!

Congrats to all. I quit Copenhagen about 10 years ago after 15 years. I really don't miss it at all. The worst part was the long hours in the treestand without it. This past season I really don't remember thinking about it.

Kepp at it. If you need to vent PM me and we can work something out. IT is well worth it.
