shot a buck, but...

hey guys, first of i would like to say i have been visiting this message board for about 4 months now just to read others posts and look at pics but havent had a need of your guy's advice till now. To make a long story short, this evening i called in a nice 8 point with my grunt call and ended up taking a 20 yard quartering away, to the right, shot(somthing i feel very comfortable with). anyway when i shot i hit about 6 inches left of where i was aiming but dead center up and down on his body, and trotted about 20 yards and stopped still in the open in the draw i am hunting. with him standing there i can tell that he is a gut shot and i only got about half my arrows length of penetration (28.5). well i watch the buck walk away very very slowly, took him about 5 minutes to go 10 yards into the wood edge and then watched him stand for another 5 minutes just inside the edge of the woods before he very slowly took a couple steps behind a big cedar tree where i couldnt see him anymore. i waited about ten minutes and then got down very quietly and walked back to my house. I feel like i should wait till morning hoping that he has laid down right inside the wood edge and is going to die there. it was raining at the time of the shot(4:30) and still is, and will be raining for a large majority of the night. so i dont want to pressure him and him get up and run and then not have a blood trail to follow because of the rain. I mostly just want to know if you guys think he will lie down and die and be there in the morning or not. thanks ahead of time for all your guys' help. confused.gif

Re: shot a buck, but...

hey dogdoc, i live a lil over a mile south of route 66 a couple miles east of the town of arcadia, just east of lake hiwassii(sp?) on 45 acres. we used to lease another 80 acres behind us but the people we leased it from sold it to a housing developer. so we just have the 45 now. myself and one of my dads close friends of a very long time hunt out here.

Re: shot a buck, but...

First off, welcome to the Realtree forums.

"YOu did the right thing. Wait till mornig, follw the trail and be alert with an arrow knocked. If he was going that slow he is obviously being affected. You may have got liver, spleen, or a major artery. Go slow, look throughly, and be ready for a shot."

I totally agree. By what you have said, (describing the body language of the deer) I think you'll find that deer laying not too far from where you last seen him, but he my need to be finished off, so be prepared.

Let us know how it works out in the morning eh. wink.gif

Re: shot a buck, but...

The meat will be fine, just cut out the belly flaps completely and give it a good washing before you hang it.

Make sure it is spotlessly clean inside and it wouldn't hurt to give it a wipe-down with viniger after it's up and hanging

The hind quarters will be just fine as well as the front quarters and backstraps. wink.gif

Re: shot a buck, but...

hey sorry for taking so long guys but i had school all day and then basketball practice, i got up and looked for the deer for about two hours this morning and found nothing, no blood, no nothing. it had rained so much my whole property was like a swamp. well about 11:30 my dad calls me while i am at school and tells me he found my buck, but he is still alive and i need to come home and finish him off. so my buddy from school and i got checked out and came home. we went to where my dad had seen the deer and as my dad had already told me, he couldnt move and some coyotes had already eaten out most of his rump. So i stuck another arrow through both his lungs and heart and he expired almost instantly. i did borrow my photo teachers digital camera, and i will be uploading the pics at school tomorrow and i will have them up on here tomorrow evening after i get home from my basketball schrimage. thanx for your guys support.
