I got my 45/70 Encore barrel back from Precision RifleWorks today. David cut the barrel down to 18" and installed one of his "Maximizer", 3" aluminum brakes, which he bead blasted to match the finish of the stainless barrel. He also modified my Leupold Dual Dovetail base to a 6 screw setup. He also did some finish work on the throat of the barrel. I mounted a 3x9x40 Nikon ProStaff scope, in med height rings.

I am so happy with the way this gun feels. It has none of the muzzle heavy characteristics that my 209x50 barrel has.

David did a great job on everything. Plus, he is in Mississippi, and I am in Connecticut. I sent him this barrel on Sat. Jan 21st, and recieved it back today the 27th. That is quick service!!!

Here are some pics of the gun...

Tommorow I have to go see if I can find some 45/70 ammo, and hopefully I will get to shoot it on Sunday. I can't wait. David told me to expect recoil similar to that of a .243. I will update this after I shoot it.

Better wear ear plugs & ear muffs. That thing just looks LOUD.

Welcome to the "Big-Bore" club. LOL--sometimes it may be a 2" group but it will be a 1 Holer !!

I had a buddie who had a brake on his 300 mag and it felt like nothing. WAY less then a 30.06 IMHO so he may not be far off the mark.

but, there is a big difference in a 60,000 cup 300 Win Mag and a 40,000 cup 45-70. The higher the pressure, the more effective the compensator is. It will definately help cut the recoil, but to a 243 level is pushing it a bit.

tedicast, do you mind me asking what something like that costs? That is very impressive gunsmithship (if that's a word LOL).

I supplied the barrel, ($239), and the Leupold base ($16). It cost my $15 to ship the barrel to him.He shortened the barrel to 18". He made and installed the brake, bead blasted it to match the barrel finish, modified the base, and drilled and tapped the 2 extra holes in the barrel, and he did some throat work on the barrel, and shipped it back to me for $160.
