Re: Rabbit hunting

If you have the resources or land, build a fenced in area say an acre in size, with brush piles, and place a few domestic rabbits in the pen along with your dog, the dog will seek them out on sight at first but will scent chase them.

I also like to skin a fresh killed rabbit (during the summer, fresh road kill) and let the dog play with it and then take it away, drag it along the ground, hide it under a brush pile and then put the dog on the scent trail and let him do the rest. Eventually he will associate the scent with brush piles and he will know he has to go under the brush piles to find the scent.

Need to spend plenty of time with the dog and if you can invest in shock collars, they can work great so the dog doesn't chase any unwanted game.

If I do not have the time each year I would take the dog to a beagle pen and have the dog trained for several months but it could be a little costly ($200-$300 a month for at least two months) but if the dog has it in him, he will be a great dog.

Another option is to see if you have a beagle club in your area and join it. They usually have penned in areas that you can place your dog in.

The more the dog is around rabbits, the better he/she will be.

Good luck

Re: Rabbit hunting

what my uncle does, is hes got a pen thats about 3 acres ... hes got abotu 15 rabbits in this pen ... and he just throws hard food out into the pen, and scaters it all over the place ... this is after hes let all the dogs play with the rabbit hide ... wehn the dogs pick up a hot trail, theyll recornize it, hopefully, and follow the trail ... but he trains beagles for a living, so i guess this could be a shortcut. but all i know is, hes got great dogs!!!! so id say it works!!
