I'm not a knowledgable enough mechanic to know exactly what the problem may be, but, in the long run, you may think about getting a whole new tranny if the problem worsens because at the age of that one, it may cost as much to tear it down and rebuild it as getting a brand new one put in. The beautiful thing about that is they are everywhere and the year doesnt matter! Id call a salvage and find another tranny on a later model truck and just switch them out. A 350 transmission is EASY to find because Chevy/ GMC have used them so wisely! Seriously, transmissions can get expensive and having a front seal out is going to cost! If it's a 4WD, drop the ds and transfer and spend ($10 or less). You probably have more in elbow grease than parts. Get a book and do it yourself. Not sure if that seal can be replaced without dropping the transmission. Some good manuals are out there on Chevy's from haynes and chiltons. It really is an easy fix, but you need a seal installer. I'm not sure if there's a tool out there that will substitute for one. But just go to the jobber and ask for a rear output shaft seal or extension housing seal for 2WD. Your truck probably has the 700-R4 transmission if they ask. Good luck! Mirage Posted March 18, 2006 Report Share Posted March 18, 2006 Re: I\'ve got a transmission leak... sounds like the rear tailshat seal is leaking, very easy to fix, and the seal only cost under $20 while under there grab hold of the drive shaft and see if you can move it side to side or up and down the rear bushing could be worn if so there is a special tool for that however that would be kinda rare to find. jack up rear of vehicle be sure to block wheels because when you take out the drive shaft the truck could roll over you!!! Take out drive shaft should be 4 7/16 bolts and slide shaft out pop out seal with pry bar and install with a big socket and hamer reinstall shaft and check level good luck buddy!! Man, some of you guys need to open a tranny shop around here. Seriously. You wouldnt believe what it would cost you to have that done around here! I can understand that the part is probably cheap but Tranny work is Expensive! Do you not have to tear down the tranny to get to the seal?
