Re: any other ranchers on here?

I wish I had a ranch, but we live on my in-laws place of 350 acres. Most of our livestock is for fun instead of profit. A few cattle, bunches of goats, chickens, ducks, guineas, and a growing number of miniature donkey's and horses (they're my sinster-in-laws pets), and we're working on getting some pleasure horses again for my wife and I.

Re: any other ranchers on here?

I grew up on the Fulton Quien Sabe ranch in Channing Tx. was one of the biggest ranches in the the Panhandle at the time. We had mainly herford and charolet, with 3 different mare pasture dropping all quarter horses. Had a longhorn pasture and about 80 buffalo that just went wherever they wanted. After high school and before the Marine Corps. I work for the Brainard Cattle Company up in Canadian Texas and then went to the bunkhouse at the Excell cattle company running Yearlings. Most of my family have worked for the 6666 in Guthrie at one point or another. My Great grandfather and Grandfather were the famouse Schweitzer Saddle makers for the Matador Ranch, in Matador Texas. So I have a pretty long background with ranching!!!

Yeah, I grew up doing it too. Couldn't wait to leave when I turned 18. Moved to Fort Worth, got a college degree, then found a good job in the IT field. Now at 47, I really miss it. I deer hunt on a 7000 acre ranch and I find myself doing more and more ranching out there every year. I guess it's something you never really outgrow.

Leatherneck the Matador Ranch used to run yearling cattle all the way up here-in the big bend of the South Saskatchewan river. I've hunted mule deer there and it's still called the Matador pasture. Mandy Jo has more elkj than cows on her place but are they ever hard to hunt lol.

Re: any other ranchers on here?

I grew up on my families 1300 acre ranch and livestock mineral business.

We ran and continue to run Limousine. We have ran several different breeds in the past but these have pretty much been the only ones we have stuck with. Currently we have about 10-12 horses running out there too. Theyre getting outdated though. Just about everything else is done on 4-wheelers.

I moved out when I was about 17. I now have 12-acres near town. I dont run much myself. I just have 4-horses. I really dont miss moving, worming, tagging, etc. hundreds of cattle. I do still go help on occasion but only when I have to help!

Btw, Ive hauled/ baled more square bales of hay then I care to remember. From the time I was old enough to buck a bale I was loading it on flatbed trucks, pulling a rake or baler, etc. Thats one thing I dang sure dont miss!

Yeah we have a few...

I live, work and run a 5000 acre ranch for Braums by myself. We are running close to 2000 head of cows here right now. We are a cow, calf operation. Mostly angus and some crosses. All beef cattle....

Those critters keep me going...

Sleep!!!!

What's that...

Yeah, I'm known to be a lite sleeper just ask Muff... grin.gif

I'm out the door by 5:30am. everyday and alot of times I won't get back in until 6pm. to when ever. Kinda depends on what's going on at the time. Don't take me wrong. I do get home early somedays...

I have 1500 head right now that's dropping calf's. They really haven't started getting with the program until now...

Out of all the one's that have calved some far (Knock on wood) I have had only had to pull 10 so far and in one group of 250 cows. There our newest group that we have. There 4 year old angus. For some reason they have been the worst calvers so far.

All the other groups that are calving are older cows and so far everything has been going great with them. So far I have a 2% death lost out of 1500 head and all the cows should be done calving in about another 2 weeks.

It keeps me runnin' that's for sure and there's days I fill like I'm getting burned out...Bad... But I just take a deep breath...Look straight ahead and get after it...

You know what I miss is riding fence in the spring before we let the cattle out to grass. I always rode fence in the evenings, man were the sunsets beautiful. It was usually the perfect end to the perfect day unless the horse had a wild hair.

I have a Z71 I ride fences with...

I'm not a horse rider...To hard on the back side if you get my drift... grin.gif
